I think it would be fine. The hearth looks to be more of an "area" than an hearth (if that makes sense). I see you have outlets on the right hand side. I know moving them would be a whole heck of a lot of trouble, but if you do built ins, that side would be great to run a cord for your electronics. I have built ins on either side of my fireplace and I'm not overly fond of the shelf parts because it's just something else i have to dust, but they do have cupboards on the bottom on one side and top and bottom (tv behind sliding doors) on the other. This I enjoy a lot as it hides board games and all sorts of junk that's not pretty. What does your fiance think about doing built ins? Will it be his job or will you both hire out? I'm asking because they will require drilling into the brick and I don't know if that's doable for you both...

I am at a loss as to how to update this stove wall in our family room other than tile or stucco. I was wondering if anyone had a similar situation and was able to rework it without tremendous expense or completely starting over. The room is being updated with paint and new lighting . Style will be rustic modern With beams boxed out and retrimmed with white wood and heavier molding and stucco ceiling replaced with light wood. Walls are going white with black bookcases and window trim.

FWIW I like the fireplace, but I'm also partial to painted brick. I would do a few things to modernize. 1) add modern/ abstract art over the mantel. you mention that your style is glamorous, maybe this is a good spot for a big mirror. That would help to hide the brick texture. 2) add simple wood mantel to cover the brick one. This could basically just be a wood box that slips over. Not sure what wood tones you use in the rest of the house. I think it would be cool to add contrast here with a darker wood tone. 3) add a fireplace screen and some accessories. It looks like it's wood burning, could you do a cool nook with some logs on the left side? 4) I would put a big plant on the left side if you are looking to somewhat minimize the fireplace. Home Depot usually has cool banana plants in my area. Something tall would make the fireplace less imposing. 5) put a mirrored or lacquered tray with books or other decor on the hearth. I think right now it's just a lot of white brick to look at, but introducing some sleeker textures in accesories would help to get a more glam and modern look.
