Is my Coral Tree Dying

I just moved to this house in Del Mar, CA (coastal). We have a huge beautiful coral tree in our backyard. When getting quotes to trim it back, one tree service said it was dying/dead and we should cut it down completely. It has rot at the base of the tree ( on the right side only). The left half looks good to me. Otherwise the tree is green and looks good.

You need to post pictures of the tree. It’s not possible to give an opinion otherwise.

They often are, this cultivar being even more prone to disease problems than many other Japanese maples. And, yes, digging a hole out of a clay soil and then replacing the soil with compost and top soil is an excellent way to collect water around a tree and kill it. This is about the main reason to never amend planting hole back-fill soil. All Japanese maples must have excellent soil drainage at all times.

I agree with the other post that unless the entire bed was amended, you have probably created a bowl of amended soil where you planted the maple. If the soil is wet, then it's most likely receiving too much water. In very warm weather coral barks tend to suffer from leaftip burn. I just made the mistake of moving one from a regular mostly shade to 1/2 sun and the poor plant suffered terribly. I moved it back and it's doing better. I have a similar soil situation in my backyard. I just imported around 4 cu. yards of soil to create a berm and avoid trapping water. I also amended the clay soil before adding the berm. If your soil test only contained soil from the amended portion of your soil it may not reflect whether adjacent soil to too clayey and trapping water. From my visit a month ago to NC, I can tell you I've never seen more healthier fast-growing maples than lovely NC. If it weren't for the humidity, I'd be your neighbor. Visited the Duke and NC State Arboretum while there - great places!

Did you remove the scale or the tree? Can you post a picture of the tree with a close up of the scale? What kind of trees did you loose and how old were they? If you have multiple trees with the same issue I would want to id the problem before replanting with more fruit trees since it sounds like whatever it is is spreading. The good news is that once the weather starts to cool in the next few weeks a lot of nurseries will be having fall sales. Watch out for potbound roots. If possible look at the roots before you buy and stay away from any tree with long roots circling around the bottom of the pot. Good luck!

I looked up Cockspur Coral Tree in Botanica, and could only find Cock's Comb Coral Tree. However, Botanica says that the tree is propagated from seed in the spring or from cuttings in the summer. There is a Propagation forum here on GW. Perhaps they will be of more help. You could also do a "propagation of Erythrina" and see what pops up. Good luck!

It is certainly NOT dead!! And doesn't even look much like it is sick or dying. If you have concerns about the overall heath of the tree, then you need to call in a qualified arborist - not just a tree service - for an evaluation. You want to be looking at ISA certified arborists only and preferably one experienced in tree health/safety assessment.

the usual rule is.. get 3 opinions ... insist on seeing their insurance certs ....

at worse.. you take down the bad side.. but i dont see any reason to take down the other part ... but im not there in person ..

do spend the money for a certified arborist.. tree doctor ... knowledge is power and all that ... it might be a deal where if you hire them.. there is no charge for the inspection .....

looks like del mar tree care is so certified .... so whatever they say.. after an onsite inspection ... but do let us know what they say ... pleeeease .....

but the bottom line is... there is probably no emergency.. if it takes a few months to get it taken care of... odds are it wont be a problem.. we call that tree time ... its probably been damaged and rotting for ten years ....

and if it has to go.. it has to go ... plant a new tree .. and move on ....

Thanks Ken... I tend to be a bit of tree hugger and can't stand seeing a beautiful tree like that taken down. Thanks for the link. We will definently have them come out. Your right though, If it has to go it has to go. Thanks again and I will keep you posted.
