Paint Design Dilemma

Looking for a paint color to brighten up our kitchen /dining room

We are looking for a paint color to brighten up our space. caninets are beige and some colors weve been trying bring out a yellow undertone. brown tile floors, and countertop staying. low light room. changjng the house over to cool tones. if anyone has had sucess with a favorote paint color id love your advice.

so far SW comfort grey brings out yellow cast

sw interesting aqua also a no go

also tried valsapar holmes cream as a nuetral but too yellow

That kitchen cabinet color is not going to play well with cooler tones . As for brighter that comes from lighting not wall color. I do notknow how much lighting you have but all of it needs to be LED 4000K before looking at any wall color . I like this for a neutral and often cut it 25% for nice light shade and it tends to be a good transition from warm to cool colors .

Without a picture of your dining room, it’s difficult to suggest a color, let alone a shade.

Just based on your kitchen and wanting to lean towards cool colors, you can’t go wrong with white. It will offset the dark counter and floors and lighten room(s). Down the road if you plan on changing the counter or adding a backsplash, it will be easier to work with. Suggest Simply White, based on your cupboards.

Add a blue rug (cool color) which works well with beige/white/brown.

If budget allows, lighting can make a difference and suggest something with wood.

Hopefully white will also work in dining room and again, add blue.

Do you have a close up of the backsplash? Is the kitchen open to the family room? Are there any colors you like or want to avoid? I would think a midtone neutral for the kitchen since the backsplash is busy, but I’m no expert. Most of my rooms are SW nomadic desert or kilim beige. Something similar may work. Or SW Accessible beige. I’ve seen that look good in low light and HD has the formulas in the computer.

I would not suggest chalk painting anything. Don’t destroy those pieces. If necessary, sell them - and get some unfinished and/or cheap pieces to chalk paint, etc. or get some pieces that are more in line with your current style. And yes, a more minimal approach to the China/crystal display would be more in line with your style. I grew up in New York City, in an 8 bedroom house, built in 1910 - house was full of antiques from all over the world, some of furnishings were shipped from Italy, etc. My father was in shipping. My mother was an artist, from Australia - and she actually grew up on a farm. I say all of this to say: Unless you happen to live on a farm that is very interested in maintaining a more meager + rustic sensibility - don’t be so limited in your thinking that you would pass on and/or consider destroying quality heirloom pieces for a design trend. For I can tell you that the pieces that you have would surely be considered treasures and held in high esteem by many real farmers in actual/real farmhouses.

What a cute hound! You may have gathered this, but nothing makes a dining room less current than a matched set of dark wood everything (chairs, table, buffet, etc). But as you mention those things are staying, so there are lots of other options :) Hang artwork on the walls, two pieces that complement each other, on either side of the hutch. I think you're on the right track with choosing some colorful art, and get window treatments like roman shades (in a flat style or relaxed European style with banding, please no excessive swag) with some of the same colors as the art you choose. You could have the shade banding match your art, or you could have a patterned fabric with some of the colors in your artwork. brighten up 1910 built in dark room

Since this is a a home built in 1910, I'm going to guess it is Craftsman style. Natural colored woodwork would be most authentic. If everywhere else in the rest of the house it is already painted white, I guess you could paint it, but that makes me cringe. In the '80's - '90's when my friends and I were all buying our first homes, the people who got old homes spent hours removing paint from woodwork. Now apparently the Millennials have come around and painted it all again. :-) Everything goes in cycles. My suggestions would also vary based on how you're going to use the room. Would taking the room from dark and depressing to warm and cozy work? That wouldn't necessarily be light and airy, but would be suitable for a home office or TV room if that's what you're going to use the room for (unless the person using it for a home office likes light and airy). Your floors are a warm color, therefore be careful to use warm colors on the walls. The gray is definitely oppressive. Look at BM Historical colors. In character with Craftsman style would be ochre, a rusty orange, or olive. If you're not as interested in replicating a historical color scheme, just use a warm white. However, don't paint this room without taking into consideration how the rest of the house is painted so the whole is coordinated. If you do decide to paint the woodwork, paint the walls a slightly darker color for contrast so the trim has a little pop. IMO, the wallpaper suggested above is not in keeping with the style of this house, so unless it is going to go with the rest of your house, I would explore other options. There are definitely Craftsman wallpapers out there, but they're usually not done in light colors.

Thank you very much for the insight. We went with SW Autumn mist w/ white dove trim and it lightened everything up!

did you ever change your bulbs? right now they're really giving off yellow hues. If you want cooler tones, you have to change your lighting

Try some 4000K bulbs and take some other pictures. (you can always return them if you don't like it). Your overall lighting affects the colors. Plus, you say you don't have a lot of light? then get brighter bulbs. (nothing over 4000K though)

not sure about that lavender color w/those cabs. hard to tell with your photos

Ha yes we did switch to a Valspar color/SW paint. That lighting does look drastically different. Tomorrow I’ll grab some of those bulbs and see how we do. Thank you so much for the response ❤️

So it's Autumn fog?? it's a very cool blue gray but looks periwinkle on your walls w/that lighting and yellow cabs!! yes, try the bulbs. lets see if it helps
