This hit home with me....

A friend of mine wrote this, and it really did resonate with me. She is a horse person and up until recently, a rodeo trick rider, and she gave clinics for people wanting to learn how to do that. I am not sure of her age, but I would guess, late 60's or early 70's.

"I’ve always hated winter. I would look at the calendar and know how many months, weeks or days before winter began. Now I’ll admit, winter in the South isn’t terribly physically demanding or life altering. But winter up North? I won’t even go into that.

A couple of days ago, as I was bemoaning my aches and pains, loss of memory and general loss of physical ability, I realized, I am in the Winter of my life. The problem is…(well, there are a lot of problems), but first of all…..while we have calendars on the wall that count down the months and days before Winter, there is no calendar that lets you know when the Winter of your life will arrive.

For that reason, I simply assumed I could ignore that season and continue right on just as I was. I’ve never seen any courses or books on how to deal with the Winter of your life. No TV documentaries, blockbuster movies, no self-help gurus or fancy retreats you can go to for help. I’ve seen family members and friends age, I’ve watched puppies become old dogs, baby colts become old horses. Somehow, I never thought it would be me. I thought I would forever be able to ‘fly’ on the back of a running horse.

For the most part, I just told myself that while I may be getting older……I wouldn’t let that change me. I would just put my stubborn streak to work and physically (and mentally), REFUSE to enter into the Winter of my life.

That worked for a while but eventually, I couldn’t ignore the changes. The hands that don’t have enough grip to open a bottle or jar, the fingers that are bent and twisted with knuckles that no longer host my wedding rings. The body that no longer can lift the 100lb bales of hay.

But perhaps the worst part…..my brain. Damn traitor, evidently it LIKES Winter. It has slowed down to a crawl and no longer even recognizes certain commands. Evidently, the storage area is like a Rolodex, it still spins but doesn’t stop at the right spot and sometimes, information flies off the roller and disappears into the black unknown, never to be retrieved again. I makes me so angry, so frustrated. “Why can’t I remember her name, I just spoke with her last week? How can you be so stupid, Jaye?”

It’s frustrating, embarrassing and demoralizing. I NEED a new Rolodex! It’s Winter.

I’ve been told…..”It beats the alternative.” Now that little remark makes me furious! That’s somewhat like when a horse stomps your foot and you are hopping around swearing, someone says, “Well, at least it wasn’t an elephant!” Does your foot feel any better then? Hell No!!

Am I blessed to still be here, (especially after the line of work I was in)? Hell yes! But, does that lessen the frustration of not being able to do the simple things that I used to do easily? NOPE! I hate Winter."
