Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Another 80's Rock Exterior Dilemma - Help!

First, the rock has to stay. Can't imagine or afford to remove it all. I'm getting a new roof and plan to paint soon after--- I'm leaning toward a gray roof. I like whites for the siding but I'm also intrigued by some of the blue-gray colors to bring out the grays in the stone instead of the yellow/orange color. Any and all suggestions/feedback are welcomed and appreciated. - THX.

Maybe a close up of the stone since I see very little gray as it is. The stone seems okay I would not have it on the pillar and for sure the house needs to be painted but what color I am not sure without a better idea of the stone.

I have a question for you Erica. How has the diagonal siding held up? Pretty much every house I have seen that has siding in this orientation has significant rot damage. The diagonal orientation apparently allows water to seep into the siding much more so than vertically or horizontally installed siding.

I agree that painting your stone is not going to give you an updated look. I would either embrace it or remove it entirely. Your greatest impact is going to be in painting the stucco and trim, front door and garage door. All of those except front the front door should be the same color. I would recommend picking a warm gray or taupe color out of the stone. This will both downplay your stone and bring the house into a more contemporary pallet. For your front door I would consider a dark rich color. As K Lawrence said, go big with the light over the front door; perhaps something with simple lines on a bracket. As far as painting the brick, I like your brick, and would try fixing the color of the stucco and trim first and see what you think. But this is also a house that wouldn't look bad with the stucco, trim, and brick all painted the same color.

For the trim color I like the lighter one better. Seems to work with the brick more. Personally I don't think the green works with your house, but that's just me. I would probably look more towards a taupe on the siding. Regardless, once you've removed the shutters don't reinstall them. They are much too narrow to work with the windows. I would also paint the garage door the same color as the siding. I would not paint the brick. You take a no maintenance product and turn it into a long term maintenance issue. I am no landscaping expert, but even something like this makes your entry more important. I'm sure that someone else will have some better ideas on how to improve this area and make it more welcoming. OK just saw the entrance image. Are we going for a contemporary home or an olde tyme cottage home?????? Have their been some changes to the original building?? The reason I ask is that I was getting ready to propose a contemporary garage door to go with your boulder stones. Which was do you want to go???

@Norwood Architects The very bottom had some rot where the wood was in contact with the ground and the previous owners had a sprinkler head and overgrown plantings that probably didn't help. Otherwise, it's held up really well.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting Here are a few close-up pics of the stone... and yes they even had it on the fireplace inside the house and on the lanai at the back of the house!!! OMG!!!
