Looking for recommendations to decorate this area

Hello everyone, looking for some ideas on how to decorate this area. I don’t like the layout of sofa currently and how underutilized the window area is. Appreciate some different suggestions here. Many thanks.

Pull the sofa and chairs in so their front legs are on the area rug, and put either a small table and a couple of chairs, a small accent chair and end table, or, a desk. in the window

Swap the chairs for the sofa. Put the sofa up against that wall..no reason to waste that footage. Then do as above and be sure all the front legs are on the rug. That will give you the space you need in the window for a card/puzzle table or one on one seating area. Perhaps a chaise would good there? Having the chairs on the window side increases the walking area to the window.

The Piano If you already have a piano, draw a scale outline of its floor measurements and use it with the floor plan to ascertain the best location. If you don't have the piano yet, the floor plan will illustrate your available space. From the front of the keyboard to the back, a "baby" grand piano measures 5 feet or under, a "boudoir" grand piano measures 5 to 7 feet, while a "concert" grand is around 9 feet. The grand piano is likely to be the focal point of the room, so ensure that other furniture doesn’t crowd it. A smaller grand with plenty of space around it will look more impressive than a large one squished among other furniture. Piano Location There are a few do's and don'ts when it comes to positioning a piano. While it may look attractive to place it in front of a window, never expose the piano to direct sunlight. This will cause fading and can affect the value. In older properties, avoid positioning the piano on an outside wall, as changes in temperature and humidity can damage it. In houses that are younger than around 80 years, this should not be such a problem, but leave a good 12-inch gap between piano and wall. Also, avoid placing the piano near a radiator or other heat source. Other Considerations A grand piano has a hinged lid that opens on one side to let out the sound. The open side of the lid should face the seating area, or at least toward the center of the room. Avoid placing the seating on the other side of the piano, as the acoustics will suffer. If the living room is very large and the seating area is some distance from the piano – near the television, for example – or if you want to create a small, dedicated music area, position an ottoman in the curved area of the piano.

What direction does the window face? If it faces west, like the door with the window in our dining room does, I would suggest something like a roman shade or a beautiful pair of drapes to keep the sun out of everyone's eyes. Once the futon is gone and then I would remove the shelf and plant from the corners and your room will seem larger. I would suggest 4 chairs around a low table. That makes for a great conversation area and for company while prep is going on in the kitchen. Maybe the table I’m seeing there now could be pushed to the island with the 3 chairs around it? Or if 4 chairs won’t fit maybe 2 larger chairs with ottomans in the corners next to the window.

My favorite of the ones you've chosen is your third island light. I like the sparkle you get with the metal and glass juxtaposed with the stone fireplace and wood floors. However, you might want to consider not doing clear glass in the kitchen. We have a fixture above our island with clear glass, and it gets dusty so quickly. And because it's in the kitchen, tiny bits of grease float up and then make the dust stick to it, so it's difficult to clean. I also think that your dining light can be a different style than your island/sink fixtures. (I think your first options are too matchy.) That would define the dining area. Here are some options I found that are reasonably priced. Sink: Island: even though it's glass, the top is solid to hide the dust. Dining: the white color ties in with your white cabinets. This company also sells chandelier shades so you could customize it with a color or pattern.

Replace the art on the left with something larger/taller & more colorful. It should balance visually with the window & plant on the other side.

Is that a mirror over the fireplace? I would remove that altogether and just leave the brick white. It looks bulky and out of place.

The art on the right, over the chairs looks way too high. Please post a photo looking straight at the chairs and the wall behind.

Remove wall hangings. All wrong. (sorry). Try hanging large art currently behind chairs but turn it so long sides are upward. (Looks like abstract, so might work turned vertically). Move faux plant to bay window and add a couple more descending heights. Add a pair of floor lamps one on each side of fireplace. No additional art behind them. Turn rug so it runs across the room. Place sofa facing fireplace. Put sofa table behind sofa. Angle chairs either side of fireplace. Add small drink tables one for each chair. Temporarily put coffee table (too small for scale of furniture) and replace with large square glass top and wood coffee table. Style new coffee table with 4 quadrant styling. A interesting grouping in each of 4 sections of the coffee table.

Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions. Just to clarify, currently the living room is empty. This is just a photo from the previous staging. I’m planning to get all new decor, TV, sofa and art work.

Oh! Great news! Lots of good options then. My basic floor plan still works, but I would suggest more streamlined, smaller scale furniture. Do you want more recommendations? What style are you hoping for? Will you be painting?

Yes thank you. Definitely looking for more recommendations on where to place the TV, type of sofa that would uplift this space with a more modern look. Yes we will be painting as well. Thank you.
