Well, first things first! I see your piano is on an exterior wall; that is harmful to its health, so I hope we can help you find an interior wall for it. Secondly, the front yard (especially the hedge) looks to need some serious attention. How many do you need to seat here and what are the kids' ages and interests? Are they at the cuddly age or teens? You might start by shopping for a large rug. Ruggable.com has wonderful washable rugs that work great for kids and pets. Lots of colors and styles, some designed with kids in mind. Do you want some privacy from the neighbors? Not sure how much of that the shades provide.

The kind of overhead light that is there causes me to believe this is intended to be a dining area. You might consider changing that light fixture, perhaps to a ceiling fan with lights.

The main thing I'd want in a reading nook is a truly comfortable chair (or two), a side table with both a drawer and storage and a tall thin metal lamp with a three-way bulb, including a setting that gives off a lot of light.

With a lot of reading now being digital, you might consider adding a desk for your computer to the room for searching for your next read.

The futon can go & the shelf in corner. Piano can go at an angle where futon is or inside wall. Do u need a bigger table?

Overall you need to change all the furniture to bright ones. modern furniture will give you a much better feeling around the place. a small dining table will be ok. and L shape sofa will great.

I'm not sure I would design a room around 14 year old kids. They're probably way past snuggling and will retreat to their rooms and cell phones shortly, if not already. You can make an effort to hold their attention, but it may require a video game platform, snacks and less of mom. I hope your kids are not typical, but that's about the score in households today.

I'd probably put a comfy sofa facing the window, two arm chairs facing the sofa, a low bookcase with art above lining the left wall, and anchor all the seating with a rug. I'd lose the etagere in the corner. Essentially pretend it's a sunroom and take advantage of the view.

Then you're a smart woman! Have you asked the kids what they'd like to do in that area? A couple of bean bags and a nice chair for you, plus a low game table for checkers, Scrabble, etc might work. A sofa facing the window will close off the space which you may or may not want. You can test it by moving the futon there and seeing how it feels.

Think about all the ways you'll use the space. Perhaps four chairs around a big table would be most useful for solitary reading and gathering to play a game.

I think you are right. What kind of chairs would you recommend??. Armchair would make it too crowded I guess.
