Ok, I just got done redoing m 1980's honey oak kitchen with a white vinyl floor, so I can relate to what you're wanting. If you want to reconfigure the kitchen, please spend the money and hire a designer, as all above have mentioned. You don't need a design/build person at this point, but a good kitchen designer. If you live someplace where its hard to find such a person, you can find one on here who can work with you remotely! We didn't change the configuration much, though we did yank out a pantry and instead designed a whole wall of cabinets to take up the "eat in" portion of the kitchen. Given that we didnt' reconfigure, I relied on my own choices, and good contractors to make it happen. For the new wall of cabinets, I simply worked with the kitchen person where I bought the cabinets. Lessons learned: get the plan, and the estimated budget, in place before you do a single piece of work. Build 15% contingency into that budget. If you're doing it without a general, make sure you get good advice about how to sequence the work to minimize the pain. Its worth it in the end, but it takes patience.

I wonder if the fridge is a bit far from all the action (ie dining, living, outdoors). (Perhaps not surprisingly) I would think about having it where the "Pantry" currently is listed (leaving some pantry cabinets around it + adding others to the fridge's previous location) =) Thoughts on the counters/cabinets along that top stretch? I had also assumed you wouldn't have seating there - are you envisioning a two-tier counter? Underneath the non-sink section of counter (ie where the higher tier could go) you could have a long bank of cabinets to help with storage. The gallery idea came up before - and I bet something gorgeous could be designed! I think my only hesitation with that set up would be the temptation to cut through the main working part of the kitchen when going from one side of the house to the Master. Final thought: making the island just a few inches deeper - though I'm not sure its current dimensions. Basically just to make sure there's sufficient space along that edge for bowls/plates to put your freshly prepped goods! Also too, you could then have a bank of i.e. drawers that face the dining room for even more storage! #AllTheStorage

No one can help you plan the space without measurements of all walls, doors, windows, appliance locations, etc. and your budget. I second the advice to live with it for a while. It will help establish your priorities for the new space, other than to get new cabinets and countertops.

My vote is don't give up cabinet space for anything more than a 36" range. That is a nice cooking space that will give you 6 burners (or 4 burners and a griddle)....that is more than enough space even for avid cooks. What is to the right of the range? Is that a doorway that is able to be blocked off with a new wall? If so I would put the refrigerator on that wall with the range. If it is a doorway that can't be blocked off, I would keep the fridge on the current wall BUT instead put your fridge in the left corner or closer to the left corner (opposite setup as your inspiration pic). Keeping the refrigerator closer to your sink and range will make cooking more efficient. I vote for not extending the island any further...the more clearance you have around the island/dining area, the more open your kitchen will function and feel...and that is quite a long island/long enough to give you a lot of space to enjoy I'm not a huge fan of narrow pullout spice racks in a base cabinet, i would put that 6" into larger drawers for your island, and put your spices in a drawer near your range or in a lazy susan on one of your upper cabinet shelves near range. What is your clearance between range and island, and between island and wall? What are your island dimensions in your current layout? Finally, the best thing you can do when setting up a kitchen design - which you may ave already done - is figure out what you would plan to put in each space so that you optimize your design for your own personal needs. You have some narrow-width drawers banks...just make sure you have a mental place for everything BEFORE you finalize plans :)
