But I did rake up the leaves on her property next to mine where we share a mutual irrigation ditch plus all the wonderful rotting maple leaves in the ditch. I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. (I loved how they talked amongst themselves in spanish to decide about taking them to where I live which is behind the new subdivision) They actually loaded all the cut grasses and raked up leaves and put them in their truck and took them to my house and unloaded them for me. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. Swinging a hammer yourself...doesn't get any better. You're not good at the creative part. OK. Are you sure? There are people who some things just come naturally. I've known some. Most creative people I've known got to be creative though hard work, risk taking and never saying they weren't good at it. I think it's more of choice. If you're more interested in having the details then for sure let someone else do the creation. But if you're interested in the creating part you should go for it. You'll likely surprise yourself and it opens up a whole new world. The last thing is home size, even room size. When I bought the house we're living in I made plans for expanding it to 2000 sq ft. Gutted it with that expectation. I don't remember why but at some point I asked myself why 2000 sq ft. Because that's how big a house is I thought. Only reason. When I gutted the kitchen I found that originally it had been tiny. The house was originally 900 sq ft and was big for the neighborhood. Pretty big families with kids were raised in these homes. Why did my wife and I need a home that was 2-3 times larger? Started searching the web and found all the tiny/small house stuff and I was hooked. The reason I bring this up is because building a small house well is easier and cheaper than building a big house. That may seem duh, but it's real easy to dismiss it. It's harder to dismiss when you've driven your 30,000 th nail. The time and money saved can be directed into things you really want. A few months ago I re-roofed the house. Think it was 21 squares. The whole time I'm up there I'm thinking how dumb this is. I don't even use 2/3 of the house. I seriously considered tearing down part of the house. Central air went out, on the roof deal. $8000 to replace so I got a split system that came pre-charged and could install myself. $2000 and the house is so much more comfortable and quiet. And best of all no ducts in the attic. There have been many more benefits. Smaller is worth a serious consideration.

You talking to me? Or is the above post for everyone in general? Your post is total BS Architectrunnerguy. 99% of homeowners/builders have a budget and getting competitive bids is SMART, NOT CHEAP. The lower bids do not have to mean the cheapest quality. I have found in every instance the opposite to be true - every time! Big names mean big overhead. I own a small business. I get business because I do better work than the big guys at a lower rate. The subs we did hire do quality work- better than any home I have ever built or lived in. Maybe I got lucky, but my framer, carpenter/sider and cabinet maker are talented.- and yes, cost less- because they are small local craftsman. Again, cheaper does not mean inferior quality. The home we're building now is simple, because we wanted it that way. And by getting lower quotes (but again, NOT lower quality) we can have extras- R60 in the attic, Bibs in the walls, two foot roof overhangs, exterior and interior LED lighting, floors wood throughout, higher quality plumbing fixtures, counters, appliances, etc. And guess what? This 'cheap' home will have NO MORTGAGE. This home is also going to be the most energy efficient home I have ever owned. But we are lucky, we can do some of the work ourselves. What is wrong with that? So we are CHEAP because we: > Researched and hired the best local talent and kept the money in the local economy. Therefore our son will not have to take out large student loans when he starts college next year, therefore he might be able to contribute to society instead of being a burden in the future- and his old parents might be able to save some money for retirement and long term insurance so the taxpayer won't have to pay for our 'cheap' old asses in the future. I don't know what your motivation was for your post (probably $) but it's just not true. You don't have to pay 25k to an architect or 50k to a kitchen designer to have a quality home- or to post on this forum. i would also say that since the merger with Houzz, this forum has really gone downhill. People in the building industry used to offer helpful advice here, but now all they do is try scare tactics- and not because they care, but because they want to make sure you over pay for their services. Why all the insecurity when people post about saving money and thinking outside the box some? There are always going to be people who will buy what they're selling, So what gives? And also know that there is one "pro" poster here that posts under 3 different names. I can't be the only one reading these forums for years that has noticed this. its just so deceptive and just plain wrong. I'll let you guess that one. in my opinion, I would not take any serious advice on these forums from people in the building industry - not since they merged with Houzz. If you already have an idea of what you want, a design-build firm would be able to answer most questions and, if needed, bring in the required personnel. Sometimes they might do free consultations or estimates. An architect would be expensive, and you could get the job done with less money.
