basically center the bedroom door [ about where pantry is] .place pantry w hinged door at end of that little hallway. When you enter bedroom and turn left ... w this immediate passage over to the side area .......place the closet/walk in instead of toilet and sink. then in the top positions, instead of [ walk in] you place all the bath/lavatory components. I'd probably shrink the island a bit [102 inches?] so its not in hallway. I'd probably extend wall on side of fridge so the hallway is a bit more private for the new position of bedroom entry. The pantry at end of hallway will be more overflow storage...not any less useful...just a bit different. You might get a little more width at the bar with this re-do. If island were pulled back from hallway it appears it could be a square and not interfere w dining zone..... and two sides w seated people is always nicer in a social setting . Lined up looking at windowless wall is never as dynamic as people somewhat facing each other and having a view out into the space beyond where the action is.

@herbflavor thank you. i’m having a hard time picturing what you mean with the pantry at the end of the hall and then putting the closet where the toilet and first sink are. The way I’m seeing it is then with enough room for a doorway into the bathroom area the closet would only be able to be like 5x6’? I was hoping to have an island that seats my family of 4 but if i make the island square it will take a couple of feet out of the dining area so it would be about 11’ wide. I suppose maybe thats ok?

What do you think of doing double doors to the bedroom? You'd be giving up pantry space (or the bar), but it's a relatively simple change. If you do double doors, make sure to place the electrical switches beyond the open door's resting place on the wall.

I'm totally biased, though, because I like double doors and I dislike bifold doors, so this suggestion is a win-win for me, lol!

If you are happy with the ensuite and kitchen layout as is, then move the door and reduce the pantry to a 4' bifold. Instead of a 30" bedroom door it looks like you have enough room for a 36" door. That will help.

In GREEN you will probably have a large beam running right over the head of whoever sleeps on that side of bed. Unless you have a really steep roof and long overhangs, it doesn't appear you will be able to flush a beam up in the attic.

we have an ensuite. the bath at the far end is better. you dont always want to walk by your fixtures to grab a sweater or change your shoes. Believe me. Take your graph paper and start moving the fixtures/bath fittings to the top....see how it plots out.

I like One Devoted Dame's idea. If you add a side-loading pantry to the right of the fridge, you can make up some of the lost pantry space, and also turn the corner on the sink wall with the uppers to add storage space there. The thin red line notates the bedroom vestibule. You could use only one of the double doors on a daily basis, but you'd have the option to open both for moving furniture.

Rough draft but I think I pieced together several pieces of advice here. Door is 36”, closet moved to end closer to bedroom door and further from shower, pantry cabinet also aside fridge. Thoughts on this alternative layout? Trying to achieve dining island for 4 without cramping the dining room area, privacy of bedroom door being so close to the kitchen but still practical for moving furniture, and a functional ensuite.

Could something like this work?

@jennsbabysky I think so! That large pantry would be nice. The only thing is I think the door would have to swing in to the room and would probably be kind of annoying any time it was left open. I wonder if a pocket door to a master bedroom is practical.

Lots of great ideas here. One question I have is: where is your laundry room? If given an opportunity, I would put it as close to the master as possible, ideally with access to the closet or master bath where most clothes/towels accumulate. See a possible location. Also, I have the door to my MB right (and I mean right) next to the front door (house is 4 years old). I thought that would bother me, but it’s actually proven to be convenient.

Forgot to add: I’m guessing you’re planning on putting the bed under the three windows - uninterrupted wall in front of the bed will allow you to add a fireplace in the center if desired and/or mount a TV (if you like to have one in the master).

@Svetlana J thank you! The laundry room is in the existing home and not in the budget to move it but I do appreciate that input! That does make sense. That’s good to know about the entry near the front door, too.

Have you verified if you can move the toilet all the way to the back far corner of house? Typically, the depth of the sanitary tie-in that the toilet has to meet up somewhere will determine how far away the toilet can be from that tie-in.

And looking at the beam I mentioned earlier, a truss girder may be able to happen, but not sure about whether you would have to remove the existing portico roof (and whether its vaulted or not) and reframe the whole thing from trusses. Just something to mention to the architect to verify as that could potentially be a thorn in your side later.
