We need to see a floor plan and to know how you cook.

This is the main level Floorplan with kitchen and current cabinet layout. I plan on extending the island another 6 or 8 inches depending on what is allowed by code. The kitchen plan has also changed a bit because we got double ovens.

I cook/bake at home all the time and host large family dinners.

Sink in island, remove peninsula and make the island longer.

It's hard to read the dimensions, but given how far your sink appears to be from the fridge, I would suggest putting it in the island, or adding a prep sink.

I would put a prep sink in the island. I also agree with a single level counter. I also don't think you have enough room to make your island longer.

Note that 10' isn't really enough for a table, seats at your peninsula, AND access to the exterior in your dining room. Ideally you would have at least 12.5' there (you need 5' between counter and table for back to back seating, and you should have 4' to the sliders so they can be accessed easily while people are sitting at the table). You may be able to get a small round table to work there if you put the seating at angles.

Do you entertain with a completely open kitchen now? Does whatever you have work for you?

You're building this house for YOU so if you want an elevated bar to hide the dish rack (or the rest of the kitchen), do it even though it's not in vogue. Well, only if it works with the kitchen layout...

If you'll be doing buffet serving off the peninsula, you don't want the sink there without a bar, and possibly not even WITH a bar.

Thank you everyone for your input! I really appreciate your comments and it has made me rethink the entire layout. I am going to see about removing the peninsula and extending the island. It will provide better flow and I think make the dining room feel bigger as it is a bit small.

Dish rack? Double sink? A single bowl is very functional when you have a dishwasher. And it needn't be a 30 or 36" oversize sink. 24 or 21" interior is still very large in real use. Kitchen design software defaults to the big sink base and double sink from yesteryear. Don't start with that and you'll have more counter and storage drawer cabinets if you choose for function.

If you extend your island, keep in mind that a lot of slabs max out at 10', and most larger islands will require a seam. This is fine if you book match, BUT it will force you into symmetry a bit, which isn't necessarily good for prep space - our island is 10' but my DW is at the very end of the run, with my sink adjacent, so I have 5' on the other side for prep. A lot of people center their sink in their island, which means they may not have sufficient prep space next to their sink. Since you cook and bake a lot, this space will be important for you. If you really want to center the sink in the island, I would want at least 12' of island with bookmatched slabs.

Also if you like to load the DW while you cook (I do), make sure the DW and range are not across from one another.

@dan1888 I have a 21" sink (maybe even 24") in my current living situation (apartment between houses) and I abhor it. I can't wait for my farmhouse sink. If I were designing my own kitchen I would only go that small if I had no other choice (updating a tiny kitchen in an old house for example). I would get rid of stuff in my kitchen before sacrificing sink size. Most people have more kitchen stuff than they need anyway.

I've had the opposite experience. Zero problems using a smaller sink for everything under the sun. There is no piece of kitchen equipment I can name that can't be easily cleaned in a 21" and even smaller sink. The grates off my large pellet smoker do go iin the laundry utility sink to soak overnight for convenience. That's it. . . We're lucky there are multiple choices so we can each be happy.

Are you open to changing the design of the kitchen? The peninsula and island are not very functional as is.

I am not a pro so please keep that in mind, but in my experience the elevated bar does give you a bit more separation and does hide things like drying dishes etc. A friend of mine has a new house with a single level peninsula but is looking to redo with a bar. Yes, it is outdated. But I would not have it any other way. I'm not very tall so standing in my great room I cant see anything on the peninsula counter even when I'm closer. It may vary from person to person and I'm a fan of having atleast a bit of separation between the spaces, so my opinion maybe biased. Good luck!
