Comments (6)Hmm, but do they last? I had not realized that the warranty was rather short. I just looked at the warranty on the Marvin site, and it has different time periods for different things, from 5 to 10 and up to 20 years. However, to pay all that money for a shorter, confusing warranty does not seem to make sense. I don't want to do this again in 10 to 20 years. Hopefully never again. So, I think I'm back to my Sunrise/Vanguard/Restorations questions. Is the Vanguard (http://vanguardwindows.com/doublehung_windows.html) window really better than the standard Sunrise (http://www.sunrisewindows.com/windows/double-hung.aspx)? Where do Restorations fit in? I did just get pricing for the Sunrise: 3 fixed picture windows, 1 casement window, 8 double hung windows, and 1 half round window. Sunrise Windows. Brazilian Pecan interior/Earthtone exterior. Glass is; Ultra U 12 with argon gas. Quote totals include all labor, materials, options, and all clean up. $10934 How does that sound? This company does not intend to replace the brick molding. Is that OK? (The house is 20 years old. From what I've seen, the brick molding looks OK.) My city requires a permit, but some contractors are saying not to bother or I should get it? What do you folks say is the best practice on this?...See MoreDouble Hung versus Casement..Marvin Integrity?
Comments (9)Thanks for the feedback guys. The look is sixes with me but there is one wall of the home where I absolutely know I want DH because the windows are not easily accessible to clean otherwise. From a "Just do one or another" visual perspective DH would probably win just because of that. Does double hung tend to run less expensive in the Integrity line as well? I'm looking at 6 foot high windows in a few locals and the casements there appear to be standard tempered according to the Integrity catalogue. I'm going to guess that I could maybe get away with untempered DH and probably save some? Mooredb, have you had your jeld-wen windows long? How are they working out? I have to admit the overall opinion of jeld-wen windows on this very forum scared me away early on, tho I think even in the end the wood interior of integrity is worth the premium for us....See MoreMarvin Infinity Casement Vs Double Hung pricing
Comments (11)Drew, I am glad you are happy with the windows that you selected but I am not sure that you feedback should be the standard bearer by which vinyl is measured. By composition, the windows that you installed (composite) are 60% vinyl resins. Does this mean they are only 60% junk? There is such a larger collection of vinyl windows out there that is numerically going to be more junk by shear volume. That said, I would not refuse to own and automobile because I once owned a Ford Pinto. If you look at the design pressure (i.e. measure of structural stability), you would find that of the top 100 windows out there, better than 80% would be in vinyl. Probably a better indicator of strength than past experiences or fancy brochure imagery....See MoreMixing Marvin elevate and essential.
Comments (27)Wow! Those prices are pretty impressive. I only got one quote, but I guess I should shop around. I've been going crazy too deciding on windows. I wasn't happy with the Pella product at all, especially the fiberglass - it has a wood grain look to it and looked really cheap to me when we went to see a house that had it installed. Anyway, we have decided to go with Marvin, but can't decide between all four of their options - Modern, Ultimate, Elevate and Essential. Previous owners replaced original aluminum single plane aluminum windows with terrible beige Milgard vinyl windows. I wish we knew what the original windows looked like to get a sense of the style. I doubt they were originally double hung in this home built in 1978. They are LARGE and they replaced with cottage offset single hung with the lower half smaller. The seals are all broken so need replacing. Now we are racking our brains - Do we keep the single hung? Do we go more modern with top fixed and bottom awning? Or go double casement? ...ugh too many options! I'm also scared of going black on the interior although I always think it looks nice in photos. Your casements look fantastic!...See MoreKelly
