Marvin Ultimate wood interior/aluminum clad exterior

I continue my quest for replacement windows for my home in the Denver, CO area (mile high altitude). I'm trying to narrow down the window options, but I continue to be confused.

I'm considering the Marvin Ultimate wood interior/aluminum clad exterior, because I can get the colors I want both inside and out. I also love the look of wood. My home has all natural wood trim inside.

We need 13 windows. Most will be double hung. We have one or two picture and may do one or two as casement (egress issues).

However, I keep hearing that wood windows require a lot of maintenance. I'm not clear on what that maintenance entail, so I'm turning to you folks.

If the exterior is aluminum clad and the interior has a natural wood finish, what do you have to maintain? How often?

Also, are Marvin Ultimate good windows? I want good quality, as we plan to stay in this house forever.

I see several glass options, so we'll select something that gives us decent U values. I can't seem to find anything on air infiltration. How are these window in that area?

In case it matters, I'm currently considering Sunrise (not Vanguard, but I gather those two are really the same), Ply Gem Premium Series, and Great Lakes EcoSmart, all with decent glass packages (not necessarily the top of the line, but a notch or so down).

I suspect I'll have more questions about those vinyl window options, but I'll stick with my Marvin wood window questions for now.

Best commercially available wood window on the market today (pricey but.....). Keep the outside cleaned, caulked and you should have no issues assuming a correct install. Vinyl I will let others speak of but I personally prefer wood.

You are going to pay for it but it is arguably the best and at minimum, top 3.

Last year we replaced five picture windows with Marvin extruded aluminum exterior, wood interior windows. Our previous thermal windows had fogged and were a mess. At this same time we re-sided the house with HardiPlank concrete siding. The extruded aluminum matches exactly the shade of paint we were using and the windows blend in well. My husband stained and sealed the wood interior of the windows and says the quality is excellent. One large pane arrived with a few scratches, we complained, Marvin came out and replaced the window. No problem. And they were fast. We have 5 more windows to install, we should start in a few weeks. We need to replace some plain exterior wooden entry doors, they are a mess. We are thinking of going fiberglass, or will go with Marvin if they have an aluminum outside/wood inside, which I am not sure they do. The dealer in Knoxville, TN., gave us a great price on the windows, Marvin Planning Center, Sam Ledford was our contact. We still have not met him, we ordered by email(as we live 1 1/2 hrs. out of town) and picked up some of the windows and had the larger ones delivered. Hi NC1924, I couldn't respond to your email because you told Gardenweb not to expose your email address. So I'm responding here. I ended up with a mix of Andersen 100, 200, and 400 series, plus one Marvin Ultimate window. The Andersen stuff is nice for what it is. It looks nice and operates almost flawlessly. I haven't seen the Milgard clad in person, because the two sources I was considering (Bruce Bauer lumber in Mountain View and Direct Buy) didn't have any on display. After seeing the one Marvin window I put in my kitchen, plus all the ones on display on Bauer, I would definitely say: get the Marvin if you can afford it. Their windows are extremely well made and look beautiful. I'm very, very happy with the big, cherry awning window in my kitchen. I wish I had sprung for Marvin for the rest of the windows in my great room / kitchen and master bedroom. In hindsight I could have afforded it; my employer keeps throwing more money at me. They would have looked nice all in cherry, and my plans to stain the Andersen windows to match didn't work out. (More on that below.) I know nothing about window economics, but I do do a bit of woodworking. Mahogany is very expensive wood and is also harder and tougher to work than pine or fir. A price delta of 2x doesn't surprise me at all. Finally, go look at them in person somewhere, don't just use the internet and take people's word for things. With windows, the fit and finish really matters and you can't get a feel for that on the net. One thing to check when you look at them is how much of the unit is wood. I ordered some Andersen 200 series windows and doors in stain-grade pine. The wood is nice, but at ordering time I didn't notice that the frame and tracks are plastic composite. The white frame would have contrasted too much with the cherry-stained wood I had planned, so I ended up painting the wooden parts white. Laura

Re: Painting aluminum, most reps I talked to say it voids the warranty, b/c you have to sand the aluminum to get the paint on, apparently and that interferes with the finish, so it voids the warranty on their finish, whatever that means. I have widened the possibilities to Eagle, Loewen, Pella's Architect and Marvin. Pella was too expensive for what I wanted. The rest were competitive in price, even though it had to be custom size for Eagle and standard for Marvin and Loewen. Pella had to be custom, so I am assuming that's why it was so expensive. Marvin also has a shorter lead time of 4-6 weeks vs Eagle and Loewen had to be 8-9 weeks. So, I am inclined to go with Marvin, but I haven't seen any of these windows in person yet, so I am worried about looking at just one and deciding. Gorgeous home. From that distance up and if they are going to be painted, why not opt for an Integrity option? You will never have a rot issue and the paint seems to hold up even better on that substrate than it does wood. The cladding and the trim would be the same so I am not sure where the visual offset would be felt.

Hmm, but do they last? I had not realized that the warranty was rather short. I just looked at the warranty on the Marvin site, and it has different time periods for different things, from 5 to 10 and up to 20 years. However, to pay all that money for a shorter, confusing warranty does not seem to make sense.

I don't want to do this again in 10 to 20 years. Hopefully never again.

So, I think I'm back to my Sunrise/Vanguard/Restorations questions.

Is the Vanguard (http://vanguardwindows.com/doublehung_windows.html) window really better than the standard Sunrise (http://www.sunrisewindows.com/windows/double-hung.aspx)? Where do Restorations fit in?

I did just get pricing for the Sunrise:

3 fixed picture windows, 1 casement window, 8 double hung windows, and 1 half round window.
Sunrise Windows. Brazilian Pecan interior/Earthtone exterior. Glass is; Ultra U 12 with argon gas. Quote totals include all labor, materials, options, and all clean up.
$10934

How does that sound?

This company does not intend to replace the brick molding. Is that OK? (The house is 20 years old. From what I've seen, the brick molding looks OK.)

My city requires a permit, but some contractors are saying not to bother or I should get it? What do you folks say is the best practice on this?

Pricing seems very reasonable.

We don't require permits for windows here but I don't see a goverment missing a chance to grab more money.

That being said, if we do need a permit, we have the homeowner pull it. It is specifically excluded on our contract.

If you want it, you can go pull it.

Ooops, by mistake I posted the same thing twice. Sorry about that!

So, one more in the mix. Another company likes Great Lakes windows, which I've never seen mentioned on these different forums.

For a similar configuration (slightly different mix of windows; some sliders), the Great Lakes Uniframe (http://www.uniframewindow.com/products/double_hung.html) with triple pane EconoMax glass would be $10,332 and the EcoSmart (has added insulation in the exterior of the frame and the composite reinforcement http://www.ecosmart-windows.com/features.html) with with triple pane EconoMax glass would be $10,957.

Anyone have any experience with these windows? Based on what one person said, the additional insulation and reinforcement sounds like a good thing there here in Colorado.
