Comments (7)The window view is of my new "back yard" of crumbling asphalt and my new neighbor's tiny dilapidated white house sitting directly on the property line. In the evenings, I'll also have a pretty good view into my neighbor's kitchen. But this view won't necessarily be sacrificed because the sink will be replaced by a large counterspace next to the range, which I expect to use extensively for food prep. I plan on centering the sink in the island, but I was unsure how to make a cover panel using the Ikea software. I think it will be nice to have people sitting at the counter while I wash pots/pans and load dishes into the dishwasher. When I said that I value aesthetics over function, what I meant was that I value other people's perception of my kitchen over my own. The exterior of the house currently has little to no curb appeal, so I'd like the interior to be somewhat impressive when I have guests over. Resale value and future rentability are also important. I don't have much experience in designing kitchens and only recently started looking at pictures of other kitchens, so I'm afraid of making a mistake by going with my gut. I also know that I won't have any problem using a kitchen that I find ugly but everyone else finds attractive. Comments (15)Both cabinet pictures are beautiful. I wouldn't worry too much about the darkness of the cabinets, as long as you love it. I renovated a kitchen in our last house and originally decided to go with off-white/cream, because of the light in the kitchen (not much) and because I thought it would be too formal. I just could not seem to make the choice however, and kept returning to the dark wood (we used cherry, it looked very similar to the cabinet color that you love). So, I decided to go for it, along with the Absolute Black granite. To calm my fears about a "dark" kitchen, I used a wall of glass front cabinets and made sure we had high quality halogen lights, both recessed in the ceiling, and under the cabinets (all on dimmers). These decisions made a big difference. In the end, we did the right thing-I LOVED how it all turned out and the feel of the kitchen was friendly, warm and comfortable. Our GC told us at the end of the reno that it was his favorite kitchen he has ever done, and he renos about 25 kitchens a year. Quite the compliment! So, my short answer after this long response is choose what you love-it feels right for a reason. Good luck and post more pix when you can....See MoreHELP! Comments (18)Thanks for your thoughts...it just goes to show there are lots of ways to do this kitchen. I do really like that tile with Organic White but too cold overall for me...and I don't love it with the fabric but my designer does. She fired me today. She is frustrated because she is "not getting to design". I chose not to bring up the fact that since day one I have been saying I want a white kitchen and ever since that she has been trying to talk me out of it. She also hates my farm table - says it's "been done". She wants me to do an industrial table - (IMHO, also "been done" ) and I did flirt with the whole marble/industrial look but in the end, not for me. Ooops, wrong person to guide me. So the moral of this story seems to be..."To Thyself be True"...but don't do it with Buttermilk Ceasarstone. I think everyone is right - it will look dirty with the white - I am now thinking Organic White or Blizzard -the two whites I loved from the beginning. I am going to find a tile that I can get quickly. Yes, forgive my former designer, a white tile. Then, after a few less painless decisions, (hardware, stools...), before I get my kitchen back, I will get my life back. Can't wait!...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
