Coir and Foliage Pro in self watering containers

I understand that plants grown in coir need to be provided with nutrients. I have 3 plants that I just repotted in self watering hydro containers. I surrounded and topped the original roots and soil with coir. Since I wont be flushing the soil, I was wondering if I should alternate FP feedings to once every other watering, or bring it down to 1/8 tsp/Gallon per watering, or both.

I've also repotted my thyme in a coir/perlite 50/50 mix, also in a self watering container. The same question applies there as well.

Please, PLEASE, don't start by telling me I need to change containers. It wont be helpful, since I will not do it. The reason I went with self watering is that I simply do not have the time for anything else, right now. My mother and my brother passed away within 25 days of each other, and I'm crumbling under the weight of everything I have to deal with at this time, and topped with grief as heavy as a mountain. All my plants almost died twice, because I simply could not remember to water them. The self watering pots stay until further notice.

I can't even fathom how difficult it must be to face two losses like that in such quick succession.

I think in time, caring for your plants can bring some solace, but at the moment I am sure it is a burden you'd rather not have to think about.

I put two of my indoor plants in Lechuza self watering pots this year. The soilless potting mix they came with contains slow release fertilizer granules, so I am using a different system, but here's what I found on the Dyna Gro website:

"Interiorscape technicians can conveniently mix on

site 3 squirts per gallon of water (3 sqirts equal 1/4 tsp.).

Since Foliage-Pro® is a liquid, no messy stirrers are required.

If you use self-watering planters, you will find Foliage-Pro

and any self-watering planter to be a marriage made in

heaven. In fact Dyna-Gro Foliage-Pro is recommended by

the makers of the leading self-watering containers."

They don't say to lower the dose in a self watering system. I think that reflects their claim that the product doesn't cause salt buildups. So it seems the regular dose should be fine.

Now, my two cents: personally, I would go full strength, but every other watering. If that isn't enough, you can always bump it up.

Thanks you for replying and for the link. You are right about not needing any aggravation right now. I'm just unsure about the coir. Its supposed to do great with hydroponics, but I think I remember a Tapla post a while back mentioning it interferes with nutrients consumption. I can't remember. I'm so tired.

I have two Earth Boxes with tomatoes in each. I used Pro-Mix (purchased from Home Deopt) in one and Jungle Growth (From Lowes) in the other. All four tomatoe plants (2 in each Earthbox) are doing well; however, I did not add any lime to either. Since the Pro-Mix contains lime, those tomatoes are showing no signs of blossom end rot. I have one cherry tomato and one Patio Hybrid in the other box, with the Jungle Growth with no added lime. The cherry tomato is just starting to put out tomatoes, but the patio hybrid is covered with big, green tomatoes. So far I've had to throw out about 10 or 12 of the patio tomatoes due to blossom end rot. I still have about 20 tomatoes on the bush, so I'm hoping to get a few good ones before it's all over. From now on, it's Pro-Mix for my Earth Box tomatoes, or added lime to the mix. BTW, I love the Earth Box for growing tomatoes. I found some plans for building home made boxes using five-gallon buckets and an planning to grow more tomatoes in the future in these self-watering boxes.

As I was thinking more about this, I will plan to flush the tanks monthly. Before I refill them, I can let it sit empty for a couple hours to get some more air to the bottom of the wick. Hopefully that should keep the mix happy for a few years. If you are using potting mix for the wick you do not need to worry about it's condition at all. The only purpose it serves is to wick the water upward and everything else being equal the more broken down it is the faster it will occur. Common advice when filling a container is to not tamp the mix down, but just water it in. This is to reduce compaction. This advice is reversed when it comes to filling the wicking chamber with potting mix. In this case you want to mash it down firmly so the particles make good contact with each other. Best to prewet the mix as well so it mashes down even better. This distance the water has to travel before it makes it to the growing area of the mix is considerable with your design. I would recomend testing the design this winter and see if water wicks efficiently, particularly when the reservoir is near empty. If not you can try using a different mix in the wicking chamber. Peat works exceptionally well in the wicking chamber. Basically the qualities you want in the wicking chamber are the opposite of what you want in the growing area. Your wick has to overcome gravity and if you need the water to travel upward 12" before contacting the growing media you want a water sponge. The climate here probably won't cause me to use too much water. I am about a mile from the coast and barely saw summer temps break 85. Oh, you will be fine then. Most of the folks reporting having to refill the EBs 2x/day with tomatos are dealing with hotter and drier conditions. For me it was never more than 1x/day with a 4 gallon reservoir and that was with 6'tall plants, unpruned and bearing fruit.

Thanks for the comments. Terrybull - maybe I shouldn't have said A1's SWC mix.. I'm basically using A1's 5:1:1 standard mix. But A1 stated in a thread that if you're using that recipe in a SWC, then up the Peat to 2 parts. So basically what I've got is a 5:2:1 (Pine bark fines - Soil Pep, Spaghum Peat moss, and Perlite. with Lime added) EG - I guess my problem with the finger test is that I'm not sure of the results. This "soil" has a bit of a different feel, and it's hard for me to determine the proper moisture. It's funny, I've been growing veggies and herbs for several years, but this first year using new soil and in SWC's, I feel like I'm just beginning all over again. I'm doing all of my fertilizing with Foliage Pro which feels different also. And since I'm not sure if the SWC's are wicking properly (and if the roots are reaching deep enough), I'm not sure whether to fertilize the reservoirs or top water-in the fert. I've been doing a little of both basically. But all in all the plants are not looking too hot, and I don't know if it's the extremely wacky weather we've had here in Boise, ID or the fact that my greenhouse went down a few weeks ago in a windstorm and dumped every container upside down.. Not a good season so far..

I use 'Grow' from Dyna-Gro (rather than Foliage Pro) on ALL my container plantings, indoor or out, foliage only or flowering/fruiting. And I use it at half strength (1/2 tsp/gal). To be precise, I dose all my containered maples and conifers with Osmocote at the beginning of the season and then supplement with the Grow periodically through the growing season but no more than once a month. And tht is primarily to supply any needed trace minerals, as the Osmocote covers pretty much everything else.

I did some searching and yeah, it does seem that coco coir does lock out some nutrients. There are specifically formulated fertilizers for growing in coco coir, I can't recommend any because I don't use that medium alone but there are some from Advanced Nutrients, Plagron, etc.

Basically it seems to come down to a need to boost calcium, magnesium and iron. So those coco-specific fertilizers make up for it by having a higher amount of those.
