I think that will look great.

I feel it adds more interest if the island is painted differently than the cabinets around the perimeter of the kitchen.

@Audrey Hero: I agree that the contrasting island colour is nice - but does a different colour AND door style on the island lack cohesion?

I think that's a good idea. I also like an island of a different color. You haven't said what you are thinking about doing for a countertop, but I would keep the countertop the same everywhere. Also, slab fronts are a modern style, so don't do that unless that is the style you're trying to achieve.

@kandrewspa Thanks for responding! White quartz countertops everywhere - agreed they should be the same. I do like the modern esthetic of slab fronts. I wanted slab everywhere, partner dislikes strongly, so agreed to shaker. So, can shaker and slab mix?

I have bodbyn white on perimeter, uppers and lowers, with white solid surface tops. Island is kungsbacka (flat panel black) with wood top. i like the contrast. never crossed my mind that they needed to match. budget and functionality were my top priority.

Forgot to add… ive seen those sage green cabs, very nice, i think those would look great with white shaker! are you going to do a contrasting countertop as well?

@Miss TKO Do you have a pic you could share? I'd love to see it. I'm planning on a white countertop, maybe with a bit of veining. Another dilemma is that the Grimslov cabinets that I posted are "off white" (warm white), so unsure about white countertop next to those. Might make the cabinets look dirty?

There are a lot of companies that make doors for IKEA cabinets. You might want to look into a few before comitting to IKEA doors. The only one I have experience with is Semihandmade and they are fantastic. The cost was about what midrange doors from IKEA cost. I bought the DIY shaker doors and sprayed them myself. It was a bit of work, but nobody would guess that they are IKEA. They also offer a range of good colors in prefinished door fronts if you want more durability than painted. The other brand I have seen used with IKEA is Nieu Cabinet Doors.

You asked above if shaker and slab can mix--I like smaller drawers to be slab and doors to be shaker. A smaller drawer front with a shaker detail is too busy for me. Semihandmade has a line called "quarterline", which is a modern shaker with a slimmer edge. This might be a good compromise.

I don’t have a pic. I installed the cabinets myself and have an apron sink, and still - a year and a half later - haven’t done the trim around the sink, so I’ve never taken “finished pictures”. It is my goal to finish the trim over long holiday weekend. Or maybe I’ll just take pics and photoshop in the trim around the sink :)

Bodbyn is also very creamy white. I did Wilsonart Artic White countertops. I had marble in my previous house and never thought I’d love anything more than that marble, but I do! These solid surface counters are so smooth and carefree, I can’t imagine having anything else ever. I don’t mind the difference in white, I didn’t want creamy tops, I like and wanted white white. I do think having the karlby walnut island helps with the contrast.

I like the idea. I'm doing something similar although with my butler's pantry at the end of the kitchen - it will be painted with inset doors, while the stained perimeter cabinets and island will be full facing

I love that combo with white shaker perimeter, green slab island, white quartz. I am planning to repaint my white cabinets a similar color green at some point. So pretty!

I think it will look great and, in fact, look more custom. Don't do a counter that is whiter than your cabs. I'd look at a wood counter on the island (unless you have a sink in the island) and soft warm grey on the perimeter.

I feel that the doors should be the same design for a more cohesive look with the island being a different color. There are no rules though so you should do what you want.

I do like that green.

I just had a look at the Ikea site because I thought I remembered other colours in a shaker style that I had seen on a design show.

Another alternative are Ikea cabinets on the island but get doors from a place like Semihandmade.

They have doors and cover panels that fit and coordinate with Ikea cupboards. They have lots and lots of colours available.

I have no idea about pricing but many people on Houzz talk about using this company. It might solve your problem and open up a whole new world of colour choice for you. Since it is just the island, even if the cost is a little more than Ikea, it is a limited spend - rather than the whole kitchen. They have blues and pinks and greens and plenty of wood grain choices.

I agree as well, keep the counter the same on the perimeter and island.

I have different color on my island (walnut vs white) and slab doors vs shaker on the perimeter. I love it!

@newkitchenny55 Do you have pics? I can't find many pics online of mixed style and colour like this.

So because I have stools on 2 sides you can’t totally see it at first glance but I took a pic from angle it’s most noticeable. Since it’s a different color I think it makes it easier to have a different front too. (Counters are temporary but will be same on both)
