Help me decide on kitchen cabinet colours by tomorrow!
I'm desperate for houzzers opinions! I am moving into a new home in which we totally gutted the very open concept living room/dining room/kitchen. We've decided to go with an Ikea Kitchen, and have chosen the Bodbyn Style cabinets. The problem is that I keep flip flopping between the white and the grey, or mix of both.
Original plan.....all white cabinetry, grey island, BM revere pewter walls, trim and doors BM cloud white. However.....my kitchen and dining room cabinets are connecting, and I just can't shake the feeling that the dining room cabinets should not be white. I think it will look too much like a kitchen and not like a dining room.
I thought about doing all grey.....but I worry about it making the room too dark. I want lots of light. I do have four windows in the room though, and with a light colour paint, maybe this won't be an issue.
Now I am thinking, white cabinets in the kitchen area, grey island and grey dining cabinets. The kitchen and dining room cabinets are connected, however, kitchen cabinet bases are 24" and dining room cabinets are 15" bases so there some sort of definition here, although originally I thought that it would look weird having the white uppers in the kitchen touching the grey uppers in the dining room.
I am going to try to attach pictures for better clarification of what I am talking about, but please ask if I have left anything out! The short white wall is going to be the East Wall, and the green wall where the fridge and stove are in the pictures is where the dining room will be. I am going to try to attach the kitchen drawings but not sure if that will work. Ikea Plans

6 years agoIt looks like my links won't work. If anyone has tips on how to save my ikea plans to be able to share, please let me know. In the meantime, the best I can do is a screenshot.
The dining room area is where the long cabinets are flanking the glass cabinets.

I'm getting paint swatches tomorrow to see how the color reads in lighting at different times of day. Of course, it will all change with the new cabinets, but at least it will help give me an indication of what it will look like. For a 90" triple window, would my only other option be custom if I don't want a seam down the middle? Comments (15)You might be surprised to find that hardwood in a kitchen is not as horrible to keep up with as you think. PO in this house had hardwood in the kitchen, family room and mudroom and carpet everywhere else. I couldn't believe it, the 3 rooms that would be my last choice for hardwood are the only rooms that have it. My hardwood has worn surprisingly well in the kitchen- and I am really a total slob. I do wipe up water if I notice that I've dripped (most of the time, dh is much more vigilant than I am), but I'm sure that the 2 kids don't. And we have a dog too. I put a large washable rug in front of the sink and dishwasher and that really helped for those dripping wet hands reaching for the towel. It does help that we have a medium golden brown type stain and not highly polished, so it doesn't show dirt and dog hair and doesn't have to be glossy to look good. I have been pleasantly surprised by how the hardwood is holding up to our abuse. And happy not to be cleaning stains out of grout....See MoreIKEA Kitchen Help Needed! I have the old ones from them in a the high gloss white and they still look like new 11 yrs later. If you aren't spending money on a really good quality wood-look tile, they can look somewhat on the cheap side. 6 years agoI'm attaching pictures of the kitchen plan. I apologize for the quality. I cannot figure out how to convert this file so that can upload the pictures. I tried to enlarge them as the printout was so small and as a result the measurements are blurry. The north wall is 25'. The first 10' are the dining room and the last 15' the kitchen. I was planning on going with cabinetry all the way down the wall. As I mentioned above, when I had separated the dining cabinet from the kitchen, it just felt like a waste of space and made the spaces on either side of the cabinet look awkward. The first drawing, with the stove between two windows is what I was initially going with. After comments above, I'm rethinking this plan. I thought that I would not mind the lack of space between the sink and the stove, as I will have 3 other large areas of counter space (all over 4 ft), plus an island. I emailed the planner, and I asked her about placing the fridge where the dishwasher was, the dishwasher where the stove was and the stove where the fridge was. She felt that the fridge would look too bulky next to the dining room cabinets and supplied the other option of putting the stove next to the dining room cabinets. I'm not really fond of this idea, as there would still only be about 15 inches to the left of the stove. Actually I think this makes the counter space more broken up and choppy than my original plan. The other thing I don't like about this plan is that it has shortened my dining room cabinets by about 15 inches. I will have a 9ft island and the side of the island was to line up with start of the dining room in option 1. I would like to hear thoughts on placing the fridge closer to the dining room and the stove on the wall where the fridge is.
