Comments (21)Pass the eggnog! I saw an actual Reneck Christmas tree this weekend. A guy had made it for his redneck float in a parade. No pictures. The basic structure of it was a three sided pyramid set on a pole. The frame looked to be made out of thin strips of metal. There were silver Copenhagen lids (chewing tobacco) dangling from it in rows. I can't remember if it was strung with lights or not. It was pretty hilarious. I don't dare ask where they got all those lids....See MoreLooks Like we Have Another Cat!
Comments (40)Carol...thank you for your comment. Sadly I have to say that there are worse situations here sometimes when people want to go away on summer holiday. There are cases where old people have also been abandoned. Grandpas and grandmas with Alzheimers have been discovered sitting on a park bench with a sports bag full of clothing, left to whomever might find and look after them. Of course that makes the national news. I don't know how often that happens here in the islands but it has been seen on mainland Spain. However the quantity of dogs and cats abandoned at summer vacation time here is shocking. The animal refuges are already full of abandoned animals and at this time they are desperate for both space and money to feed them. It is nearly always the foreign residents who take it upon themselves to volunteer to work, clean cages, raise money through raffles and entertainment gigs in bars etc. to try and keep these refuges afloat. Often the local authorities turn a blind eye and don't help when it comes to looking after lost and abandoned animals. The Germans are very helpful and have a rescue system for abandoned dogs and after caring for them here and getting them back in shape, they fly them to new homes in Germany. It costs just over $30 per dog to fly them to Germany. But my British friends and acquaintances are always doing something to help, whether it be bringing in books and old clothes to sell at raffles, or as in the case of my friend Lynne, spending every Saturday morning for years washing blankets and cleaning potty trays at a local cat refuge. I do have to admire these folks for being so selfless. My small contribution is in taking in any stray or feral who wanders into our garden. Always room for one more at our house! :-) SharonCb...See MoreAdding another cat to the family - advice needed
Comments (24)Well, it didn't take long for my new special someone to find me. I was in the shelter's very large 'cattery' for only a few minutes when my new baby found me. He is 4-5 years old and recently 'returned' to the shelter due to urine crystals. He is presently taking 2 mg of Methigel every other day and appears fine, however I'll be educating myself and consult with my vet (after a full check up) to determine the best long-term approach. He is a black male black cat with the tiniest bit of white on his chest. He is very solidly built, weighing in at around 14 pounds and is a complete mush. He walked into his carrier and didn't make a peep during the ride home. Although I would normally just bring the cat to his 'safe' room in the house, I saw that he was quite comfortable with being handled and I brought him first to my friend's house next door where a dear freind is recovering from surgery. They fell in love and I had to pry him from her to get him home and settled. I settled him into the guest room and our other kitties immediately became curious of the new stranger in the house. Momma, the doting mother that she is, showed no signs of hostility and so I let her into the room. They sniffed each other and that was that. Boxer, my momma's boy, peered at him through the gate and they sniffed each other after which I felt comfortable letting Boxer in. Sniff sniff, hello, and that was it. It's amazing. I have never seen anything like it in my life. They are all hanging out now without one fight. Just like that we have a new friend who loves being held, pet, and talked to and is already exploring our home. So without further ado, let me introduce Seymour. His shelter name is Suddenly Seymour but I have opted to call him Seymour Hiney after an old joke - some kids never grow up!
