Waste Management in Your Area
Comments (26)In our municipality we've been actively diverting things from the landfill for quite a few years. That's not to say that things are perfect, but we are getting there. Week 1 we place our Green Carts (organics which include any kitchen or yard waste not composted by the homeowner as well as box board) out to the curb. Tucked next to them are bundles of newspapers, bundles of cardboard, and blue bags of recyclables. Week 2 we place our garbage bags - limit of 6 per property. It used to be 10. Most times you'll see a lot less than the 6 limits. Paints are brought to a recycling plant which makes more paint out of leftovers. Batteries - same as paints. Electronics such as TVs and computers and cell phones must also be brought to a recycling plant. A fee is made at the time of your purchase of such items which pays for the plant to operate and separate/recycle any and all used parts. Unfortunately there are still some pitfalls in the system. Plastics with #1 and #2 are the only ones accepted for recycling at this point since there is no resource for recycling others. There are also people who absolutely will not separate their garbage/recyclables/compostables. I just don't understand what their problem is. The municipality is starting to pinpoint these individuals but there are fears that more illegal dumping grounds will appear as a result. There are still many challenges ahead. Unfortunately the biggest one is resistance by those who maintain a closed mind....See MoreWishing Pa would get that deer brain wasting disease
Comments (20)Sweets, you should come to the South west corner of the state, you'll see more deer than you can shake a stick at. BTW, you can thank the lawyers and state laws for people posting their land no trespassing. If someone trespasses on your land and gets hurt they can sue you for damages. Not everyone has lots of money for homeowners insurance. OHIO on the other hand has a no fault law, so if you are trespassing and get hurt, too bad! I agree with the wrongness of the destruction of farmland, but until the land was cleared of trees, there were even fewer deer around. Deer are not normally forest dwellers. They like open woods. We have mostly trees on our lot, but the deer are everywhere, spreading ticks everywhere they go. We live in the boondocks and have 60 acres and only one house on it. We haven't cleared anything for housing projects. And yet the deer are a menace here. It's true you can't hunt just anywhere, but there are gamelands that you can go to. We have game lands right near us as well. Unless you want to buy your own property and hunt, you're stuck. And, pay property taxes and have to get a hunting license anyway. As for 'ruining' it for the next generation, I don't agree with that. The 'next generation' would rather play video games than go outside. Plus, people have trespassed on our place numerous times, many of them are RUDE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO REGARD FOR ANYTHING or ANYONE, and why should we just let them do what they want on our place? They trespass, they are rude, they gut them and leave the guts there and are jerks on top of it all, why let them hunt for free? As for hitting deer, they run right into your car LOTS of times, and NEITHER my DH or I speed at night. Deer are DESTRUCTIVE. They are so bad here that people must be shooting them from their cars because the game commission is making decoy deer and lying in wait for people to go and shoot them. They are a BIG problem. Just be lucky you haven't wrecked all your vehicles because of them....See MoreWhere our tax dollars are going!
Comments (4)All I know is that if the Government didn't take my money, from me and spend it on things they invent, I would spend it on me, and maybe put my neighbor to work. If the problem is all the stuff we buy comes from overseas, then look at the why the Government allows unbalanced trade, and also why any American company would have an advantage to move production overseas. It just seems that no matter what the problem, the government can't fix it, because at some level, they created it. OK, the FBI is knocking at my door, gotta go! lol George...See Moreproperty taxes
Comments (43)"Does it annoy those who don't have children to pay large school taxes?" Nope! People paid to put my kids through school, Actually, people paid to put ME through school! My kids are in private schools, so I'm paying to put them through (oops, no, forgot, this year DD is in public). But I have never minded the *concept* of paying for public education, bcs someone did it for me. Lots of someone's who had no children, even. And bcs as Steve & others point out, I benefit from a well-educated populace. In many ways. And I also live in NYC, where we waste--er, spend--$12,000 per pupil. THAT annoys me. I'm happy to pay--thrilled to pay, in fact. But I want the kids in my city to get a decent education, and I don't want to be fleeced. "Fire the administrators"--maybe (in NYC, it's "fire the janitors"). But a GOOD administrator will *make* a school. I know this, from having seen mediocre administrators, and mediocre and good bosses. The problem is, it's hard to find, and hard to BE, a good administrator....See MoreUser
