how do you make tea?
Comments (10)To make a herbal tea, use the same method as if making ordinary tea: use 1 teaspoon of herb per person and one for the pot. Pour boiling water over the herb, stir briefly and leave to brew for about 3-5 minutes. If left too long, the tea is likely to taste bitter. Herbal teas are best drunk weak, with a little honey or lemon juice added to taste if desired. Herbal teas are usually drunk without milk, but a little milk added to an over-brewed tea will reduce the acidic taste. DonÂt be afraid to combine different herbs for different flavours. Sweetening with honey darkens them and adds body. Lemon juice bleaches the colour; try rose hips instead. Peppermint, betony and sunflower teas can take a little milk. Tea made this way is called an infusion, usually used for leaves and flowers. You can buy special mugs which have a perforated insert in them, and a lid. You put the herbs in the insert, pour over the boiling water, and the herbs steep with the lid on (so it doesn't cool too much) until you remove the insert, herbs and all. Or you can buy a perforated teaspoon, which has two 'bowls' hinged together. The herbs go into this and you just leave it sit until the tea is brewed, then remove the spoon. For powdered dry herbs, you'll need special teabags, usually available from a health store, or use a couple of coffee filters after the tea has brewed to filter out the solid matter. Precise measurement isn't required for herbal tea. You can just put in a whole sprig of a fresh herb, pour on the boiling water, and leave it. That's probably the easiest way. And you can use either dried or fresh herbs. You will need to know the medicinal effects of whatever herb you are doing, to identify a herb correctly before using it, and to know which parts of the plant are used. All this information is to be found on the WWW or in books etc. It is really important to know these things!! If you use roots and other large parts of the plant, you'll need to make a decoction, where the herb is boiled for several minutes (usually 10-15), then steeped and cooled. Always consult your doctor before embarking on a herbal remedy. When used medicinally, herbs may interfere with conventional medications. A cup of herbal tea should be regarded as a medicinal dosage for an adult, though some herbs have a medicinal action in smaller dosages and should be avoided altogether in some conditions. Pregnant or lactating women, or people with medical conditions other than that being treated (diabetes, kidney or heart problems, high blood pressure etc) should be careful in the use of herbal teas. I never advocate drinking herbal teas as beverages. They contain concentrated amounts of a plant's medicinal properties, and should be taken with the same cautions and considerations as any other medicines to treat a particular ailment....See MoreHow often do you clean your tea kettles and do they mildew?
Comments (7)I don't have a tea kettle but I would assume that if you had a tea kettle with just a little bit of water sitting on the stove when not in use, bacteria, dust and other items present in the air will fall in the kettle and can create a slime factory over time if not cleaned. I personally use an electric tea kettle (British upbringing) and now graduated to a Japanese Airpot. I love my airpot. When I used an electric kettle, I never left water in it and washed it out weekly. I have filtered water and never had a problem with the tea kettles. I clean my airpot out weekly when I have no water left in it. Good luck!...See MoreHow do you make iced tea?
Comments (35)As much as I hate to say this, Wal-mart is now carrying Lusianne. (I hate to say it because I loathe WM, but it's the only place out here that I can get Lusianne.) And check the price because I discovered it's cheaper to buy two of the 24 ct boxes than a 48ct box. Go figure. I grew up in the south and didn't realize until I was a teenager that anyone drank unsweetened tea except diabetics. :) My DH is from the west and nearly went into convulsions the first time he had iced tea down south because it was so sweet. We reached a compromise, and now even I can't drink it as sweet as most places there serve it. Note, I have never know sugar to cause tea to go bad or taste funky. Old tea, improperly stored tea, teas sweetened with artificial sweeteners or with lemon or other "stuff" added to it, sure, but not refrigerated sweet tea. I use six family size bags per gallon (we like it strong and use lots of ice.) I heat water in my tea kettle. After it's steeped (which I don't bother to time), I add 1/2 cup sugar. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's perfect for us. Even my MIL is hooked on my tea now.) Note, you can't get away with that "however long" steeping with Lipton or Tetley, it gets bitter. Yes, tea bags can go "off", especially in humid climates. That's different from them going stale, and you'll know it immediately. It's a nasty, musty, metalic flavor. And, yes, tea can breed some nasty bacteria that will keep you occupied in the privy for awhile. In restaurants, the culprit isn't the urn itself as often as it is improper holding temps or the spigot on the urn. I went to work in one place where the spigot had NEVER been taken apart for cleaning. They cleaned the urn twice a day, but no one realized the spigot had to be taken apart for cleaning. I threw it out and ordered new ones....See Morehot weather: how do you get your cat to drink?
Comments (13)One of my old cats use to love to drink out of a glass (I think she liked it an extra bit when she thought it was a person's glass of water). As she got older, had more health problems, and needed to drink more water, I sometimes got in the habit of setting a glass of water out somewhere near to where she was. Her brother loved to drink from a dripping faucet and could manage to get in the tub to drink out of that dripping. Sometimes I plugged the tub and then he would have a little reservoir of water to play in after a few minutes, and I could turn off the drip. Could or would your cat get in the tub? Sometimes they like ice and if you throw a few cubes into the water bowl it will intrigue them and get them to drink a little more. Good luck....See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
