Jacaranda Tree- NorthEast FL
Comments (1)Jacaranda is a single trunk tree. What you have sounds like the original tree died and you've got a bunch of "suckers" coming up from its root system. Your best bet would be to select the tallest and thickest of the suckers and cut the rest of them off. However, you could choose three of the suckers and let it grow into a triple-trunked Jacaranda, which would be quite interesting in 15 or 20 years....See MoreTropical Fruit Tree sale in Palmetto, FL May 17th
Comments (0)There is a big tropical fruit tree sale in Palmetto, FL (south of Tampa/north of Sarasota), Sunday, May 17th from 10am-4pm. This is one of the largest one day, tropical fruit tree sales. There are many vendors and will have a table set up to answer your questions about growing tropical fruit trees. We will personally be bringing over 150 fruit trees (which is just a small fraction of what will be available at the sale). There will be some wagons on hand thanks to Big Earth Landscape. We will be bringing great varieties of Mango, lychee, sapodilla, banana, and more. We will have a lot of Inga (Ice Cream Bean) and Miracle fruit trees as well as Lulo (naranjilla) . We hope to have some ripe fruit to sample as well. Arrive early for the best selection!...See MoreNorth FL garden plants
Comments (7)Hi Bea, I live in Jacksonville, too. In my area of the city (Southside - almost the exact midpoint between the Atlantic Ocean and the St. Johns River), we have two or three hard freezes with a duration of 12+ hours every winter. I know there are other areas of town that aren't as severe, and yeah, I'm jealous. :) I struggle with the same thing - many of my plants freeze back to the ground. But I love my tropicals, so I do three things to work with them here in northeast Florida. First, I have many in pots, and yeah, I do the pot-dragging into the garage, house and screened-in porch: in, out, in, out. Second, I have most of my in-ground tropicals in the back yard. That way, the big brown mess is mostly only back there. I cover them with large plastic trash cans, empty pots or blankets. As their root systems have become more established and larger, they rebound more quickly each spring. Third, I have planted more and more trees to develop a canopy which makes a huge difference in the overnight temps for plants beneath them. Most of the plants under my live oaks and southern magnolia will come through a hard freeze unscathed while the same plant, fifteen feet away won't be seen again until late March! Comments (5)I just happened to order a nuttall oak from plant me green last fall. Was the only nursery I could find with a decent sized specimen. In searching for specific trees/shrubs, I've had to go out of region in most cases. And the few nurseries with broad selections regularly ship all over the country....See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
