Looking for advice on an area rug for this space. I’m stumped! Something not too busy and fairly neutral that will work with beige couch and dark floors. I’m thinking a lighter color to brighten up the space. Also interested in updating the coffee table/ottoman. Finally, I love the look of the curtains but because they are pleated they are more there just for look and do not offer any privacy. We like having the natural light during the day but would love some sort of window treatment to offer privacy at night. Thanks!

(Corner shelf is going to go and decor will be added to fireplace mantle)

I think to brighten up this space you need end tables and lamps and art on the wall. Then you could get a rug with a little color, to brighten up the floor. A deeper (more square) coffee table/ottoman would work well. Neutral, heavier curtains would work without the expense of blinds.

You could potentially go with a neutral rug, or you could try one with navy, grey, white, and beige since you have the pillows. What about trying a round coffee table as well. You might notice we have used round coffee tables in all of our images included below.

tangerinedoor and queenvictorian, I should edit, I’m covering the mantelpiece, I wish it were black but it’s a strange brown tone with a lot of scuffs/ damage up close. The center is black, and that will be exposed still. It was easier to just say “painted”, but it will be white in the end anyhow. Walls are a very light grey. When I moved in EVERYTHING was tan, as are the window areas I still need to paint. I’m lucky my landlord is fine with neutral paint changes. I always keep him in the loop with paint changes. But thank you, and I agree about the radiator being a piece of art. This flat has a lot of quirks I really enjoy.

Usually the living room (and all rooms) are designed with at least one workable furniture arrangement. Ask your draftsman what they had in mind. If they did not think of one, start over with a different designer. Ask them about the walk-in closet also, because 2'-0" of hanging clothes plus a 2'-4" door plus 2'-0" of hanging clothes equals 6'-4", and your closet is 6'-0" wide finished; and the hanging rod turns two corners.

The room needs a little more color. I would paint an accent wall behind the sectional in a dark brownish/plum color so the sofa has something to play against. Look at Benjamin Moore 'Suede Brown'. I would replace the coffee table with an ottoman for the feet. I like the rust color from the carpet. Get something with legs so as to not hide the carpet. I would pull the rug towards the TV a foot or so.

I'd go with a nice neutral sisal rug. It will do the job and add needed texture.

Before buying anything, suggest first getting a sense of how you want room to feel, as a rug especially has a big influence and there are so many looks that would suit your room (and buy correct size). Try searching on line for modern farmhouse living rooms for help.

I’d look for a large coffee table (again measure and decide on best shape);

Black framed prints between lanterns would tie in nicely and consider a table with some black metal.

Given TV’s size and its proximity to mantle, just accessorize hearth. Perhaps narrow wood candlesticks on one side would work.

Window treatment idea

Collect and save your favourite rooms and it will making choosing and coordinating room a lot easier (and at some point, consider adding something on either side of fireplace).

When I was deciding on rugs I spent time on rugs USA website with the see in your room option. I ended up picking more patterned rugs than I expected to by being able to visualize better.

Your home is gorgeous! Maybe one of these on the large wall would add some texture and contrast to tie in your space. :)
