Kitchen Countertop Help

Hi all,

i am hoping for kitchen couter help. my inspiration pics are a mix of same countertop throughout vs dark perimeter counters with lighter island. ive been told if the island cabinets are a diff color than the perimeter cabinets, to stick to the same color countertop throughout, however, some of my inspiration pictures go against this, so now im overthinking it.

facts for my kitchen reno are:

—-grey island (sample on floor of current kitchen photo, excuse the mess;))

—-white perimeter (sample on current kitchen counter)

—-floors as pictured

——im sold on quartz as the material, but open to other material/ideas. i love the look of marble but am scared about makntimg it.

ive also noticed with the light countertops, i like ”more movement” with the veining rather than a striaght and hard chunky vein as shown in counterop samples in current kitchen, but not too much movement either…just a healthy balance.

please let me know thoughts/experiences to help me acheive the look im going for. quartz names/brands appreciated. thank you!!

I'm not a quartz guru but I'd just go ahead and follow your first inspiration photo, if you think it's attractive. I tend to think most kitchens are too small to succesfully pull off two cabinet colors and two tops. Here's another four choice kitchen - plus they went nuts on the backsplash. What's your reaction?

Most of the opposition to mixing quartz marble and real marble is when they're right next to each other, but even then, I've seen the mix done well. I agree that with your gorgeous backsplash, any white quartz should have subtle veins.

Here are a couple kitchens with white/gray cabinets and all black counters. The second one looks like that might be a marble backsplash. Both these kitchens have a lot of light - which is definitely a factor to consider. I can't recommend a black quartz but a honed Absolute Black granite might work

IMO quartz is a poor choice for kitchen counters since hot pots are not a friend to quartz you also cannot use it behind cooking appliances so IMO pretty useless material in a spce where heat amd hot pots are the norm. Just because you see somethin in a picture does not make it good design and IMO too many stars in a kitchen just fight eachother .You are way ahead of yourself since backsplash and wall color are the last itmes you choose .I aslo never mix real with fake stone . Why not a tleast check out some nice white granites when polished pretty darn close to bullet proof in a kitchen

I thought I needed my counters to match if there were 2 tones of cabinets, but then a KD asked if I wanted the island to have it's "own moment" like a featured piece of furniture. I don't know that there are hard and fast rules of what you have to do to pull it together. We are still in the early idea phases, so I am not sure what we will do yet.

Most honed surfaces are more difficult to clean than their polished counterparts. Their texture tends to trap dirt and oils. I would try a degreaser like Coastal to see if it will remove it, but it is a preview for how much work this counter will be for you to maintain. Using harsh cleaners will also strip the sealer. Oiling it isn't a solution as it will take unevenly and be blotchy. Not to mention that the oil will attract and hold dirt. Oil on soapstone evaporates rather than soaks in like it would on quartzite. "Interior" use isn't use as a counter. It's for use as wall cladding some place that doesn't get the use that a counter will get. I would recommend removing it now before the grout and thinset harden even more. Replace it with laminate if you have to if you're on a budget. Even a smooth laminate would be easier to care for that a honed quartzite counter.

Liz, would you post a picture of your quartile counter? I am about to make a decision and and feeling hopeful in making the right one as I lean towards going with this slab. We are also getting SW Urbane Bronze island and our permittee cabinets will be SW Agreeable Gray. Thoughts?? Pics? Thanks so so much! Anyone else please chime in! I’m planning to have the quartzite leathered but still reading about durability etc. thx!!

Not sure I like the gray cabinet door next to your floors. Does it look better in person? The door looks like it's too cool a color for the floor. Black might work better, and it seems to be a consensus on this forum that gray is on its way out or is already over. But to be clear, I think the floor is beautiful, so no need to change it.

I like an island in a different color than the perimeter cabinets, but I would prefer the same countertop throughout. I think your island would stand out enough without having a different countertop. There are lots of different opinions on quartz vs granite. IMO, this is a question of whether you prefer a natural material to manmade. I think you could find as many people prefer one as the other.

If you get a counter with some movement (looks busy), then you should choose a monotone backsplash so they don't compete. But as Patricia says, the backsplash comes last. There are so many options in tile that you don't have to worry that you'll find something you like.

Thanks for comments. i put the ”facts” down because theyre things i canot change. so as to whether grey is out, or tile was picked too early, , not much i can do about that at this point. was hoping for help (countertop recs…including name, color, material) with the existing pieces for my kitchen. the floor is staying, the cabinets are white perimeter, the gray island will be gray and the backsplash is as pictured. thanks again.

Agree the mixed cabinet and courners in the first photo are too much. thats why im worried. i like it in certain photos, bit unsure if ill like it in mine.
