Which Austin? Lady of Shalott or Teasing Georgia
Comments (4)It's a little early for me to be able to compare the two as this is the first year I have Lady of Shalott. It's my third year with Teasing Georgia. So far this season, both have been very black-spot resistant, Lady of Shalott especially. And both are in their second round of bloom (we had a cold late spring so the first bloom was later than usual). In my Garden, Lady of Shalott is more apricot than orange, but she has a pale underside and a slight pink/orange edging on the petals. Teasing Georgia is more of a solid apricot for me. I don't get the triple digit temps here in Northern Michigan, but both held their blooms several days when we had weather in the low 90s. I need another year or two to evaluate winter hardiness and long-term vigor. David Austin says Lady of Shalott is one of the hardiest and easiest to grow of his roses - hope he's right. Although it may change as it matures, Lady of Shalott has more of an open vase-shaped form, while Teasing Georgia definitely wants to climb upwards (I put a pillar on her this year). Both are fragrant, but Lady of Shalott has a wonderfully sweet fruity fragrance that I love. Hope this helps you a little, dublinbay. I'll know more by next summer....See MoreLady of Shalott and roses took a long rest
Comments (13)Thanks everyone for your kind comments. Marlorena I have no idea how to grow Lady of Shalott so I would appreciate any help. It was bare root this year. I have yet to learn to prune it for next year (usually prune in February) though for fun I did try pegging a couple of the long branches. That was interesting. Out of the curved branches tall (12 to 15 inches) straight shoots grew, and several blooms at the ends of them. I think I read about pegging on this forum or followed a link, but forget the correct terminology. I just wanted to see what would happen. Hi Cynthia in Nebraska Aw, my gardening companion is Albert. He is a bit of a rascal. He hasn't been allowed on the roof deck for most of the summer because birds have been building nests in the mixed flower pots and I didn't want to stress them with Albert roaming around. They finally left last week so Albert is now joining me outside. The birds were called Junco. I never realized how hard Mommy and Daddy birds work. They were busy! They would also sit on the rail or trellises when I was out watering and click at me but after awhile they would just watch me. This morning all I saw were two hummingbirds flying around the fuchsias. Hi Sharon2079 Please do share pictures of your gardening friend. I have a Garfield look-a-like also but he doesn't come outside. He's a bit shy. I had written in the Spring how I take care of the pots and will try to find that post and learn how to link it here.....nothing special. Other than a couple weeks of too hot I think it was just a good summer for flowers. I sure appreciate all of you taking time to comment on my few roses. I wish I had more to share but this is as far as the hose will reach! LOL!...See MoreLady of Shalott
Comments (11)I love bush shots also! Blooms are beautiful, but it really helps me to see shape and size!! Comments (26)I know this is an old thread but I wanted to ad my comments based on a three year old plant. It grows very well in my zone 7 garden. It blooms well but the flower scent is scarce. I was very disappointed since I’ve read that LOS has a wonderful strong scent. NOT SO!! At least, not in my case. It’s canes are archimy outwards to at least 8 feet, and the foliage is deer and disease proof. I too dress the plant with compost yearly but otherwise leave it alone. I would much rather have planted a different David Austin rose in retrospect (something a bit more floriferous and scented), but I’ll give it another year to see whether it improves this next year...See MoreStephanie, 9b inland SoCal
