Lady of Shalott Rose-- bottom leaves curling?
Comments (4)Thank you! We are quite rainy at the moment, but I will look for spider mites when the rain is over. I do not have a terrific camera and will try for a better picture when the rain passes- but hopefully you can see the dark area on the left leaf toward the tip. These markings are only on the leaves at the bottom of the shrub. I had clipped the curled leaves before taking this picture, and will watch for any more to develop. Hopefully this is nothing-- I think I'm just antsy since it's my first David Austin! Thank you again for any suggestions or advice....See MoreLady of Shallot - David Austin
Comments (4)I have a Lady of Shalott. It is in the process of blooming now, but the flowers are not of a good initial color. They are rather washed-out looking. Based on what I have seen from other varieties, the color should improve as it gets more established. Summer Song improved this year in comparison. I just put the plant in the ground from its pot to try to get it established before the extreme heat arrives later this week. It should begin to look better in the fall if it reblooms well. Hopefully I can get a picture of it to post along with the other Austin oranges that I have....See MoreDavid Austen help please?
Comments (15)I loved the first flush or two out of our Abe, but I think the spot I have him in gets too much reflected heat. I am trying to decide if I would rather something in front of the wall that reflects or to move Abe. At some point, there will be a grape arbor on the hot lower side of the yard from him. But rather than see him hang on, I might move to a cooler spot. With him I will move Golden Celebration too, mostly cause that particular plant is a dog, should be replaced with a better one, but will give it one last chance... I think they will like this location better but it is on the shady side all summer (persimmon trees)...See MoreLady of Shalott pruning
Comments (9)Since the Lady is capable of growing 6 or 8 or 10 ft tall, I trimmed her back to about 5 ft tall at some point during her second year--to keep her more bush-like. Unfortunately, all I accomplished was causing her to lose her fountain shape. She also resented the trim of 1-2 ft off the top--wouldn't bloom decently for all the next year! She is starting to bloom again, but her not-fountain shape is not overly attractive. This summer I'm going to have to figure out what to do with her. I want a bush--but I may just let her grow as much as she wants. Maybe she will get back her fountain-shape. At any rate, she is in a spot where I could allow her to grow in a wild and woolly manner--even though that was NOT how I imagined her looking in that spot.
