How do I choose the right white for my kitchen cabinets?
I had my perimeter cabinets in the kitchen painted in BM White Dove and I couldn't be more disappointed in how they turned out. Our house is west backing so we do a lot of direct sun. I purchased sample tins and painted an entire panel to test the colour and see it at different times of the day. White Dove looks so yellow and creamy in my kitchen. I used the same paint on my cabinetry in the butlers pantry and laundry room. It looks great. I now need to have my cabinets in the kitchen painted again to get rid warm yellow colour. I went to get sample cards of Super White, Chantilly Lace, White Heron, Decorator's White and Frostine. I do not want to be disappointed again. I have cool brick layed backsplash tiles, and Calacatta Nuvo Caesarstone and my island is painted BM Paloma Gray. In theory the white dove worked but there is something that's reflecting on the cabinetry in the natural light that's causing it to look like so yellow and I can't live with it, it bothers me too much. 80% of the time we don't even use lighting in this room. I need help with choosing a new neutral or cool white. Please help!

Comments (15)We are in the building phase, but we chose the same creamy color for all trim, doors, and cabinets. Our kitchen cabinets will be antiqued with a glaze over them, but will have the same base color. Our painter said he uses Antique White a lot, but it was too strong for me. I was afraid it would leave my trim and cabinets looking yellow. We used it on walls in a couple rooms. It reads very ivory/yellowy. I was leaning heavily towards SW Creamy, but ultimately went with SW Panda White. Comments (11)Think about the style you are going for the home overall and your taste. Are you a modern person that likes simplicity = you can consider slab doors or shaker in the whites and the wood looks. Are you a more in the middle (transitional) who like a little modern and at the same time traditional aspects = you can consider shaker doors and if in your budget inset doors. Are you a traditional person = you can consider a shaker or a door with a raised panel or applied molding. As far as the color depends on your taste as well. White is a timeless color. It does highlight imperfections, scratches, dirt etc. Do you have kids? All things to consider. There is more maintenance required for the whites but they will give you a lot more mileage versus a set color. If you are a lover of the warmth of wood tones then you can definitely go with that as well. More forgiving than the white. Wood tones are coming back too. if you are a lover of color then you can consider a color in a painted cabinet. Lets say you like blues, I would try to keep it as neutral and monotone as possible like Hale Navy that has greys. Easier on the eye versus a royal blue that is in your face all the time and can eventually overwhelm you. One of the most important things to consider is the amount of natural light and other lights inside the home especially the kitchen. Lighter colors will yield an open feel, darker will yield and enclosed feel. Go with what you like and the style of the house and you will be on the right track. I hope this helps. Show us your progress. You can choose neutrals or whites in the permanent items such as a kitchen and add the color in the paint of the walls. Comments (40)Once: You'll either have too much going on with a visually busy floor, visually busy ceiling that's cut up with visually busy beams or you'll have a compete disconnect between your floor color and ceiling color. Or both. Probably both. Twice: you are introducing too many elements that you (or your husband) like individually but that don't relate well to each other. It's going to overwhelm the senses and feel disjointed. Seems the third time was the charm: You are stuck in the unfortunate spot of selecting things that appeal to you individually, but that do not at all work well together. You need some big picture help. Your cabinets are installed. That is your basis for everything else. In the pictures they do not look like the color from the mfg website that you showed but that's not surprising. Regardless, they are lovely. Your counter choice is beautiful but look here.... do you see what's happening? These are pictures on monitors where colors are never true, not real life but this is the beginning of trouble. and not inexpensive I can fix it with a coat of paint trouble. That stone is costly - are you obligated to it? Wait for your designer next week. I'd recommend totally stepping away from this and stop trying to come up with *the thing* that's going to tie this all together. I sympathize. It’s not easy.
My freshly painted SW Snowbound cabinets have some yellow tones in certain light. (And that was the case even before they uncovered my floors, so I know it’s not that.) The lowers look as-intended; sometimes the uppers do, but more often not quite. I have a theory that lacquer paint changes things (vs your general sample).
I’m telling myself to get over it, be grateful, and wait until everything is truly done. 🙏🏻
My suggestion to you for now, respectfully: Think about what else you might enjoy doing more with the thousands it would cost to repaint. (I’m also talking to myself, there - haha!) Overall, you’ve done a beautiful job on your kitchen and I hope you enjoy the freshness of your space!

When all the samples were paired prior to install they looked great together. I wanted a white tile backsplash to add a layer of texture vs. colour. I had about 20 different white tiles and they were all bright white or warm white. So I opted for a multi tonal tile so it would pull all tones of white/grey. Unfortunately, the backsplash is so cool and the cabinets are so warm it has made the tone difference look a lot greater than it should. I have full sun on the cabinets from 11:00 am until sun down every day so its a lot. We rarely need to turn any lights until winter when the sun sets earlier. I know the sun is a huge culprit. I have having built ins installed in my living room which is directly across from the kitchen (so I would have to paint them the same as the kitchen white). The entire back wall of my house is windows so I know I’ll have the same issue there. This is why I need to have the cabinets sorted before because it will drive me crazy to see yellow everywhere.
