Design Dilemma Windows Home Decorating

Christmas wreaths on outside windows

Hi everyone! I’m wanting to put Christmas wreaths in my windows—I am having a hard time figuring out size and where to put them on the window (top-bottom-middle), and if I need mini for windows and big for door or all the same size. Also, the top windows—do I put a wreath on each or one wreath for both?

Top floor: one large wreath to cover each set of windows. Main floor: wrest for the front door. Porch railings: evergreen roping.

Also consider a single electric candle in each window and a big wreath on the door.

I've seen them at Home Depot and Lowes---also Big Lots and Walmart--tehy are the cheap version of those---a green spotlight with a cord to plug in an extension cord....I think they ran like $6 or something like that. I have two placed in the backyard that have an outlet and then two in the garage. I just run a line of an extension cord through the garden or under the garage to where the spotlight is. I have timers so I rig it up to come on at a certain time. They have a small digital timer that I hide somewhere outside that connects to the extension cord. It taked some time to figure out but it is not that hard. I have a spotlight on my pond and also on my front plum tree. They have been there now for 2-3 years. Where are my manners? Sorry, had a "senior" moment. Welcome Oakleyok, and how wonderful that you've increased your space and now have the room to finally enjoy what you've always wanted. Sounds wonderful. Can't wait to see the pictures. It might be pretty if you could try tucking one of your glass tree ornaments in your garland here and there to tie the 2 together. I would try some white pillar candles behind the garland. It is so much fun to try lots of different variations until something "speaks" to you and you know it is just right. There are so many others here with much more talent and experience than I. I'm sure they can give you some great advice. He doesn't post much anymore, but maybe Jim can post some pictures of his garlands. If not, Karen may have them in her photo album and will post a link. He had a blue one about 2 years ago that I still yearn for with a blue wreath above it to die for! Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be beautiful and I'm looking forward to the pictures. Betty

Does Kirkland's have them now? I missed getting one last year as I got there when the last one was walking out the door. We were late decorating last year due to having to paint twice because of new roof leaking. I cannot get out right now to go to Kirkland's but could send DH. I hurt my back Sunday getting Christmas out of the attic, when I was slipping on the ladder and jerked my back someway or other. I can only sit or walk or lie for short periods and am taking anti-inflammatories hoping to be better for Thanksgiving. I am sure I will, but this is the first backache I have had in all my years and I can be more empathetic with others who suffer constant backache. It even hurts to breathe.

Hi...Hope this is a little helpful for you.. I made grapevine wreaths in several sizes over the years, and hang them in the attic until I want to decorate and hang them. I'm always changing 'their look'. Here's a small one that I hung in the kitchen with a small gingerbread decoration .. This is one I left plain and added some 'whisps' to soften the look... Another idea - instead of hanging...I used it as a base for a Centerpiece. I hung a few small ones decorated for Christmas inside on the windows.... I do not want to see the back of a wreath anythere so I would agree candles in the windows a wreath on the front door since your door does not appear to have window. I have 2 wreaths exactly the same I hang back to back on my glass entry door.

If you do candles you might want to invest in timers. I had them in my last house at Christmas and it was a real pain plugging and unplugging them every evening. Although I had more windows and didn't want to spend two hundred dollars in timers. Then the kids or hubby didn't want them on if they were sleeping, making the house look uneven. After two years I got rid of them. I like the idea of large bows on the windows and a wreath on the front door. Wreaths rattle in the wind at night.

I agree about using timers if you use electric candles. These days if you have internet in your house it is relatively inexpensive to install timers that will switch all the candles on at once and that you can override the time settings with your smart phone.

I bought several wreaths from Michaels that don’t have the flat back side, they are wreathy from both sides and I hang one in each window inside from a hook that I just leave up year round (an old Martha Stewart tip I ran across years ago).

Back to the OP question: I guess the wreaths I have are attractive from both sides as this has never been an issue...but I would put one large wreath in each window, two on the one on the porch. I would not want one inside each room.... The door would get something different..maybe a large candy cane wreath/bells???? Do battery operated candles in windows have 6hr timers built in? Batteries don't hold up against our cold windows anyway. I let go of the electric candles with timers in each window a few years ago, for some of the reasons already given. The timers are dang cheap at our big box stores during the season. At some point enough is enough. I do love the look!!

Are you talking fresh wreaths or artificial? I always use fresh. I would use 4 (all the same size 12-14") on your house. 1 on each set of windows and 1 on the door. Maybe a swag on the railing. And I agree with a light in each window. It will look lovely. I prefer red bows on the wreaths
