Christmas wreath & garland decor question

We just built a large new living room so I was finally able to get the tree (artificial) of my dreams. I bought it last January during the big sales, it's pretty large and all white.

I'm basically getting started for the first time in decorating my house for Christmas because previously it was rather small, now with the new addition and major remodel to the rest of it, I need this time to really think what I want to buy.

Since the tree is white, should the garland on the mantel also be white? It's a very large fireplace with rock surround going to the ceiling.

When you say all white, do you mean ALL of the decorations on the tree are white, or just all of the lights are white?

I think I would stay with the color of the decorations and lights on the tree if they will be in the same room. How beautiful it will be with the stones behind the garland. And can you just imagine how perfect it would be if you had snow outside the window!

Betty, the tree itself is white, and I think it has white lights, I forget. lol. The decorations are another thing I bought on sale after last Christmas, all beautiful glass ornaments, mostly "retro" styled.

I went ahead and ordered a white wreath and a Poinsettia (sp) garland for the mantel. I had forgotten I have some Poinsettia flowers to stick in the tree.

Now I just need to figure out what to put on the mantel behind the garland!

Beautiful wreaths and garlands! I also like to keep adding to the garland. This year I moved the nutcracker ornaments that where on a tree last year (that I changed the theme for this year) to my stairway and hallway garland (ha! husband said it wouldn't all fit) gasuz (hope to take pictures soon)

Jane, I've been really slow. Just did bay window today, and need to take more photos of things finished. I've repacked so much stuff, but unfortunately I left a LOT out to yet go thru even tho I don't 'need' to put anymore out. LOL. But you guys got me on a roll. :o) That big silver mercury glass deer is one of my all-time favorite pieces. When the wreath lights hit it, or the sunlight coming thru a small window high on front door, different colors shine in him. He picks up all the purples around him. He was originally $40 but I had a coupon that took off 40%. I think I got him 3 or 4 years ago. Michaels only had half a dozen in and I've not seen them again. My DD got one too. Janet, watching Grayson AND making all those wreaths...I don't know how you do it. No wonder you are exhausted. And I'm sure you're fighting pain every step of the way yourself. My daughter copied the Pinterest NOEL and had someone at her work cut them out for us. My Fall decor was all piled in the garage so yesterday I finally got around to actually putting it away properly, I don't usually let it sit like that, but I got to working on Christmas and side-tracked. Patricia, my goodness....how on earth do I thank you for saying such a wonderful thing about me. Wow, that sure was a day brightener!! Oakley - Don't get me started on amaryllis! I also got started with a kit, probably 15-18 years ago, saw that flower bloom, and was hooked. In terms of refrigeration, I put all new bulbs in individual paper bags in the fridge, mostly in the meat and veggie bins (w/out the meat and veggies, of course). I use the fridge because, if I stored them in our shed, they would sprout faster than I want them to. Here is my main suggestion though, and you can take it for what it's worth. Ordering your own bulbs and planting them yourself for gifts is much more fun - In My Opinion - than buying kits. There's much more color variety and in the long run it's less expensive. Some hints: 1. Use an unglazed terra cotta pot, preferably Italian, very inexpensive and looks better than plastic, and is much heavier and more stable than plastic. And an unglazed saucer, too. Pot size should be 3-4 " greater in diameter than the bulb, as amies like to be rather snug, and center the bulb. 2. Use regular potting soil for container gardening. Amies aren't fussy; they grow in almost anything. I bolster the soil with a little Root Blast, but that's not crucial. 3. Plant the bulb up to its shoulder, so that some of the top protrudes above the soil. 4. Water liberally the first time, and then only when the soil is nearly dry. 5. Place the pot in a sunny location, but when the bloom is about to open, move it away from direct sunlight, which will cause the flower to wilt faster. According to your picture, you've done that. If it's to be a gift, tie a ribbon around the plain pot. What could be prettier! And from your pictures of your gift wrapping, you would create a beautiful present! I now buy almost exclusively from John Scheepers. JS's service is excellent, their selection is very complete, their prices are good, and, in the hundreds of bulbs I've forced over the years, none has ever failed. If I'm feeling flush I may also order a few bulbs from White Flower Farm, whose flowers are just amazing, if a bit pricier. If you look at the WFF catalogue or website, their prices for pre-potted amies are usually at least 2 or 3 times the price of a bare bulb. It's ridiculous, when doing it yourself is so easy and more fun. BTW, your flower is a lovely color. Looks like the second scape is just about to bloom... There is an amaryllis forum on the other side of the GW which I read regularly, but don't contribute to, because those folks are virtual pros. They regrow bulbs from one season to the next (IMHO most amies on more than one season don't produce the same quality flower), and they harvest the seeds to create new colors. Sadly, they don't post pictures as often as they used to, because there have been problems with photos being stolen and used, e.g. on Ebay. One spectacular photo was actually stolen and published by a bulb company in the Netherlands. I think that I gave you way too much information. As I said, don't get me started on this subject. It's wonderful that you are keeping up a family tradition. Such an easy thing to do, and so much beauty as a reward. Happy New Year!

After a couple of conversations with the Christmas Central CSR, who told me that the Cheyenne wreath was the lushest 36" wreath, I did a little research about LED versus incandescent lights. It's clear to me that for a small scale decoration, incandescent is best because I want soft traditional lighting. Even though LED claims to last tens of thousands of hours, the high price doesn't seem worth it, plus you get those overly bright bulbs which I find unappealing inside my home. Also I "chatted" with online support this morning about the warranty. The warranty, which really covers whether or not the lights work for a certain period of time, is for a three month season, lights on for 6 hours per day. This means that I would be lucky to get two seasons out of the lights and then replace the string. I'm going to order the Cheyenne wreath today, along with an inexpensive storage case that allows you to hang the wreath to keep it fluffy and nice. To keep costs in line, I'm going to decorate the wreath with berries, pine cones, some shatterproof red ornaments, and ribbon this year. Here is a sample of what has taken hours to find in six stores: a burgundy-red grosgrain ribbon (unwired) in two different widths, plus brilliant red wire-edge satin ribbon (I also bought a smaller 2" width), wired gingham and unwired gingham. No checkerboard ribbon but HL did have a cool looking harlequin ribbon. I even went to a specialty ribbon store. I'd prefer not to use burlap looking ribbon because I don't think it will hold up well over the years, but it does lend a very charming look. None of these ribbon spools were from the Christmas ribbons aisle, but instead in the fabric or floral departments of HL and JoAnns. Michaels had a very limited selection of non-holiday red ribbon. It's hard to find a quality wire-edge red ribbon in the Christmas decorations department... there's always a little something extra, like gold or glitter on the edges, or velvety or sheer, red ribbon. The ribbon cost about $4.00 each, including coupons/sales. The little case of berries is from Target: 40 picks for $6, and the deep red ornaments are from Walmart: $3.48. I'm interested in the matte and shiney ones-no glitter. Still looking for brighter red shatterproof ornaments like this deep red/burgundy set, I've found them only in red/green/gold/white assortments, and the other colors are unneeded. Once I receive the wreath, it will be easy to decide what works and return the unused trim. It's all good!

I think that it will be beautiful to have the mantle matching the tree. I hope that when you have the tree up and decorated, that you'll show us pictures.

Welcome Oakleyok, and how wonderful that you've increased your space and now have the room to finally enjoy what you've always wanted.

Sounds wonderful. Can't wait to see the pictures.

It might be pretty if you could try tucking one of your glass tree ornaments in your garland here and there to tie the 2 together. I would try some white pillar candles behind the garland. It is so much fun to try lots of different variations until something "speaks" to you and you know it is just right.

There are so many others here with much more talent and experience than I. I'm sure they can give you some great advice.

He doesn't post much anymore, but maybe Jim can post some pictures of his garlands. If not, Karen may have them in her photo album and will post a link.
He had a blue one about 2 years ago that I still yearn for with a blue wreath above it to die for!

Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be beautiful and I'm looking forward to the pictures.

Your idea of a white tree with retro ornaments sounds great. There was a post by a lady at the home decor forum who had a white feather tree and a white boa made into a wreath for her mantle. Very sleek and modern looking. If I find the pics, I will post them here. Looking forward to seeing some pics from you.

White candles sounds beautiful! The tree itself isn't really retro, it's just a heavily white flocked tree.

I do have a huge fear though. In July we found a kitten in the backyard (we live in the country) so we kept it. She's about 4-5 months old now and into EVERYTHING. I can't even put my new buffet lamps up, she keeps knocking them over! I just know she's going to try to climb the tree or get an ornament off and bat it around the wood floor! Instead of a regular tree skirt, I'm going to wrap a large quilt under the tree. lol. And get the flyswatter out on standby. :)

As for your mantel (on that gorgeous new fireplace), I think that something white to tie it into the tree would be ideal, but WHAT? With your new cat, everything is subject to being knocked off! Is this new poinsettia garland white or red? Assuming that it's white, how about a couple of big lanterns? Big, because your fireplace is pretty darn big and can easily take something large. You can add color with the candles you use in it.

Maybe some of you would like to check out my web page that has the artificial Christmas trees to get some ideas. There are like 212 different ones to scroll through but you can sure get an idea of what goes with what. On the first page it has an all white tree with white lights and a fireplace mantle with matching white lit garland and a wreath on the wall. You can zoom in on the pics to get a closer look of the rooms. I love decorating for the holidays and looking at inspirational pics.

Lynn, the Poinsettia garland is red, so I was thinking about getting a smallish white garland to wrap it around.

I'm really getting excited about this, the "old" house just wasn't big enough to decorate. I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year and I'm not EVEN thinking about decorating for it. hee.

Welcome, Oak. Your plans sound wonderful. With the white tree, those poinsettias are really going to 'pop'! I can't wait to see photos from you. Especially that fireplace!
