How's your pumpkin patch and pumpkins doing so far?
Comments (61)Premature pumpkin harvest here. Heard a large crack in the back yard yesterday, and went outside to find my largest Big Max lying on the patio with a big gouge out of it. Either it got too heavy for the stem to support or the squirrels were playing with it. Anyway, it broke off and rolled down a slight slope and over the retaining wall fence. Decided it was nature's way of telling me to harvest and get the vine into the compost pile. The big pumpkin weighs 43.5 pounds and has a 54 " circumference. The smaller one is only 13.3 pounds with a 31" circumference. Loved growing these this year and will probably grow them again next year. 3 New England Pie pumpkin plants have produced 5 good sized pumpkins and I have 6 more that should be ready in a few weeks!...See MoreHow do you know when it is really a pumpkin?
Comments (14)Thanks all! I am like a proud mother :). It is now the size of a small softball, yeah! The picture doesn't do it justice (cheap camera). This plant is really happy and has 3 other females. But we had a huge rain storm so I am not sure if those were pollinated or not. I think I will limit it to 3-4 pumpkins since these are the little guys but don't want to stress out the plant too much. Do you all put things underneath it to keep from molding? I read the posts in this forum but it seems you only do it when it is laying in grass. Is that right? Elgatoloco I am going to check out that video :). Thanks again all!...See MoreAnyone know how to keep gourds and small pumpkins from rotting?
Comments (10)2 years ago DD got married October 23. We bought gourds about this time for the tablesas decorations. I washed them in soapy water, just holding over the sink and washing with a rag that way to get any dirt off. On newspaper laid them flat (not stacked) on the garage floor set a fan on them and turned every I dunno day or two I think it was? After a week or 10 days I sprayed them with clear spray paint (cheap at Walmart) let dry, turned over and did the other side. It gave them a nice shine, not overly glossy...I might have even gave them two coats of spray paint I can't remember. I still left them lay on newspaper til the week of the wedding. (we had a BUNCH of them! LOL) There were a few that we lost, not enough to matter because we bought so many. People were taking them home for fall decor after the wedding. I know mine were finally thrown away after Thanksgiving. I always spray them with shellac or spray paint to give them a hard covering. It has worked for me. Comments (33)There are lots of things I won't bother with now, but that has more to do with not enough time and my age... I've posted these before: One year I made several items to pass around for the holidays - chocolate and marzipan penguins... Sugar and fondant tea cups... and my favorite were truffles flavored with Lorann chocolate oils. And my favorite among the truffles (for flavor) were lemon confit. Fussy to make those spheres. Fussier to chocolate-glue the added lemon confit on top, and a dot of chocolate on the bottom so they wouldn't roll! I even wore cotton chocolate gloves to keep fingerprints off. I can't believe I ever did that. I will never, ever, do anything like that again! (one should perhaps be careful in saying 'never'!) However, I'll most likely studd a couple oranges with cloves and place them on the counter and table for the scent. Anything fussier than that, well, no thank you : ) And yes, I can see how a pretty waffle cornucopia would be lovely, but I'd want to eat it rather than let it sit, accumulating dust! So, I agree with you, plllog!...See Morekrystalmoon2009
