Hello,

We just moved into a new townhouse and my partner and I are relatively new to the home design space and could use some advice on items we could include in our somewhat limited entry space. We are still waiting for final window treatments to come in, but the window treatments for the doors will be roller shades and will be the fabric in the below picture.

Some initial ideas I have were to start with a console table in the hallway and then move on to a runner. I have found a console table that I like that is 48 inches long and 16 inches deep. The hallway itself is 45 inches wide including trim (47" without). Would a 16" depth console table be too big for such a space?

Any tips, color schemes, design advice, etc., from the pros would be greatly appreciated. We are going for a mid-century look throughout the entryway if that is of any help!

I would think about function first:

- This space seems well lit and that a lamp is not needed.

- It sounds like your shoes and coat live elsewhere.

- You mentioned wanting a place to put keys. When you walk in the glass doors, will you and your partner walk back towards the garage to place your keys down and then head upstairs? It does not sound to me like a natural flow of things. Is there somewhere at the top of your stairs that keys can be placed? I might also not want keys sitting in front of a glass door. (Maybe the areas I've lived in are more dangerous than yours though.)

This hallways seems much too narrow to easily accomodate a console table and have reasonable flow. If you are really after a sense of warm, welcoming decor, I would focus simply on how to achieve that:

* Place a nice floor plant in the area where the shoes are in the pic above. Find a decorative planter with a mid century vibe.

* If you want key space hang a nice key ring hook near the plant just to the left of the front door where the hinges are. Again get an MCM style piece.

* Hang a vertical picture on the long wall towards the front door across from the railings. I would get a very large framed pic - something that is large poster size and takes up 3/4 the height of the wall. Find something with a mid-century style and colors you love.

Something this size in the pic below would visually take up the space and eliminate the need for a console table. (In fact, I think this pic would look better with just the poster on that wall and no bench.)

You don't really have much room for a console, maybe under 12" deep. I would decorate with artwork or wallpaper.

I agree with @palimpsest that the entry hall is pretty tight in width. Are you wanting table for a drop place for keys, mail etc? Is that a coat closet at end of hallway? What’s the wall space like to right of door after you enter? One things I’ve found helpful to do when considering if something will fit the space is to tape the footprint of piece on the floor (or wall if art) & walk around it for a few days to see how it feels. Also consider the “bulk” of piece - open shelf vs closed cabinet - the same outside dimension of an open vs closed piece feels very different in smaller space.

I don't mind the table and mirror and can't really think of anything besides art that would fit on that wall. Can't see the table details well but could it be painted? How about red to match your lovely door? What would say "fresh and cozy" to you for that space? Have you thought of a new light fixture? A runner and a larger rug in the entrance could look good. I don't find the clock visible from the door to be welcoming so I'd be tempted to remove it.

I have a very large entry way and I started it with a darker grey bench. I'll add the photo and further down the hall I was thinking to add a table but now I'm not sure and if i do would i make it the same color as the bench or the color of the furniture in the the attached room. my house is very open

You are in great hands with flo. I also have a large entryway that needs something fantastic to happen thats why I popped in. You basically will have an entry that Im working on too! I know that I have one large piece and i finally decided on a simple bench over a console. I love a simple but impactful ”moment” ( i dont love that phrase) but it sums up whats happening there.

@Maddy Jens congrats on the house it looks beautiful! I grew up in a 1929 bungalow with no formal entry. Your new space looks like there may be room for an entry to the right as you walk in. A bench (with storage) below the window and a thin profile console table with mirror on the wall to the right of the opening to the dining room? The fireplace seems to be the focal point of the room. Keep a couch with or without chaise add-on on the wall and perhaps round coffee table with two chairs facing the couch? If you need desk space that could go where the rocker is now, against the wall perpendicular to the fireplace wall. Beautiful house! Enjoy making it your own :)

Agree, you can find some slim consoles that are 10-12".

@KW PNW Z8 @palimpsest Yes, Ideally a place to drop keys, perhaps put an entry way lamp and just general decor that creates a welcoming, homey feel.

At the end of the hallway is the door to the garage. When you walk in the front door, there is a space that is 25" deep and 53" wide (measured from wall to edge of railing). I added a picture above as the website is not letting me add to this comment. Excuse the move-in clutter! :)

It looks like the hall wouldn't accommodate a console table easily. However you might be able to place a small bench or console right in the entryway where the stairs are. Depending on the measurements you might have to do a round table if you don't want to take up too much of the walkway. Below are some of our entryway ideas to help you more.
