Water comes up through floor in middle of basement

William Byrne

We have numerous basement water problems in our 100+ year old house. One is that groundwater comes up through the basement floor in many places, mostly around the middle of the basement. Clearly there were water problems when the house was built because the basement floor is sloped. We installed a sump pump at the lowest corner (which is also the street side) years ago. It runs a whole lot but it hasn't helped noticeably.

The water comes right through the concrete. The floor was painted in the past, but the water pressure has lifted the paint, and outer layer of concrete, off in many places, leaving rough concrete patches where the water comes up.

It seems like all the basement water "solutions" are geared toward water coming in through the walls, or through the floor at the perimeter, not groundwater coming right through the concrete in the middle of the floor. We fear that they wouldn't work.

We plan on selling this house in a few years and so we really don't want to get into very high cost projects, especially if they are not guaranteed to fix the problem. We're at a loss.
