Seek inputs: Repot for the first time with my own method

RoseMe SD

Driven-crazy by the gnat-birthing old medium, I repotted my new oncidium orchid for the first time but followed my (probably wrong) instincts. I mixed large barks, recycled (newish) moss, and leca balls inside the pot but decided to line the top with all leca. This is because I need something to keep the the plant steady, and because I like the look. I also though in case the roots rot more (I had problem telling which roots were good and which were bad so cut off very few) it is easy to fix with more air coming in from the top. On the other hand, if the lose pot doesn't retain sufficient moisture I can just stick a wick in connecting to a source of water to keep it hydrated.
Please correct my (incorrect) assumptions or comment on any issues relating to potting medium and method, and share any other tips you have.
