Furnace making clicking sound when off

Hi,

I couldn’t find this anywhere else. I was in my garage doing errands and I heard this ticking sound from my furnace. Wouldn’t have noticed it otherwise. It took me a while to figure out that it is probably the pilot light trying to light? I haven’t touched my thermostat or furnace in over a year. I tested the thermostat by turning on the heat and that ticking noise which was at 10 second intervals turns into a rapid fire ticking. I think it’s probably time to replace it since it’s over 20 years old. But how come it’s making that ticking noise when it’s not even on or been used in over a year? Any help? Thanks.

Isnt the pilot light always lit? is it gas? sounds like its going through the sequence of operations. Maybe its your gas valve opening to try to light. You will usially hear a click when this happens. Probably a bad thermocouple. Light the pilot and see what hapoens. if you dont use it just kill the power. If unsure, call a professional.

Ok thanks I do have someone coming to look at it soon. Sorry not sure what it’s called. I think it’s the electric spark igniter that’s making the click I can see a small electric spark with the click. Is that trying to light something? Even when the furnace is off and hasn’t been used why does it keep sparking?

Would it be a DCS by any chance? Mine is and has had the problem before. Replaced one igniter and now after 6 months the darn thing is at it again. Mine is 5 years old. Mine never clicks until I light one of the burners.

My advice is this: #1) follow the steps described by others from previous posts. #2) If the Squirrel fan is dirty, clean it. compressed air is the easiest if you have an air compressor, or have a friend that does. Otherwise, dig out the brushes (large ones, small ones & even the toothbrushes) & start cleaning. Cleaning the squirrel cage may or may not, solve the rattling noise.....regardless though, a clean cage works less harder & produces better air flow. #3) worst case scenario: Call a furnace repair shop & have them look into it. I can promise you that if they hear the rattling, they will either know what it is and/or be able to fix it if at all possible. Footnote: Calling a repair shop(especially on a weekend) is very expensive...but it almost always gets the problem solved.

Is this because it's an open burner? DH wants the 30" Bluestar Platinum range in our next home so I've been checking all the GW threads on Bluestar. My Dacor rangetop (natural gas) doesn't do that. And the GE propane cooktop at my vacation home doesn't do it either. These are both sealed burners.
