Why does my furnace make a rattling noise when it is running?

It makes a rattling noise when it is running and im not sure what it is.
i dont know if something is loose or what.

Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this.
it did not rattle last year....i dont think....lol

where is the noise coming from? What is the temperature? are you too hot and the water is boiling? Do you have an expansion tank? If so it could be shot.

Is it from the circulator?

Need more info and likely needs to be experienced first hand. Call a service tech to take a look.

I think the niose if coming from where the spiny wheel is (dont know what it is called) But if i put my head of to the furnace i can hear it very clear. It is so loud. I have the temp at 70 degrees. No expansion tank. it is a goodman furnace about 10 years old.

Possibly either your blower wheel got loose on the motor shaft and slid and is rubbing on the housing, or the hub piece on the blower wheel may have somthing like two metal saucers spot welded togeather and they came loose. If this is the case you need a new blower wheel

So the service company came. They did many things to address the rattling door which had no effect: - changed the filter - changed the strainer in the pump - adjusted the air flow next to the pump - blew air through the fuel line back to the oil tank (the burner whined loudly after this then quieted down) - bled oil from the burner - started to remove the flow control from the system then decided it was working fine and put it back Finally they changed the nozzle. They stepped the nozzle down to .75 by 70 degrees and wouldn't you know the furnace is back to its quiet happy self. What a relief! I can sleep again at night. (They did not clean/vacuum the furnace.) The showers have been consistently hot, set at 170, 190, and 15 differential. The tech did not have a tool to test the water temperature. Still need to retest the circulator but much progress!

You should be able to tell if the bang is from the dishwasher or the basement, right? So, which? If basement-ish--well, you can get water hammer after 14 years because screws loosen. Go to basement & tighten all screws connecting pipes to things. We have to do this every, oh, 10 years or so. And, yes, it's usually the DW that is the first thing we hear it with. If the noise is coming from the DW itself...well, when our arms stopped spinning (because somehow rice got into them & blocked up the little holes & yes, it took me forever to fish some out...run a bit more...fish more out, etc.), then the telltale is that every time you open the dishwasher when it is running, the arm is in the same position. For us, it would go "clunk" and then you'd hear a whooshing noise as the water hit the door directly (the door would actually seem like it was trying to open, too). Good luck!

Nevada, NW of Reno, and something between 1350 and 1400 sq ft. - Checked and it is 1394 sq ft according to the realtor listing. It is a single story ranch on a slab. I am at something between 5000 and 5200 feet in altitude. I looked the furnace up on the Bryant website and it is 80% efficiency but I don't know which of the listed BTUs on the label should be used to determine the proper size of the furnace. The ceilings are insulated but the walls have little or no insulation to my knowledge. The calculator to which I was referred gives a result of approx 70k BTU. So if the highest listed BTUs on the label (88k) is the correct one to use for the size calculation, that results is 80% of 88k = 70,400 BTUs - so it would seem the furnace is properly sized. If that is NOT the correct value for BTUs, all the others listed on the label are less than that and the furnace must then be too small. We do normally get a lot of solar exposure here which may or may not enter into things. I have never set the heat higher than 68F and it is usually set to 60F at night and whenever I am gone. I'm on a fixed income so I watch those bills like a hawk and just wear more clothes. I did find a registry to look the business up as far as licensure, and it states he is licensed and the license is active. Keep in mind there is no AC so until it got quite cold here the furnace - or more correctly the blower - was not being used. I turned it on sometime in late Oct or early Nov. So before that there was no fan noise because the unit was not being used at all. The furnace is centrally located so that duct runs are shorter than usual. These houses were military housing for Air Force Brass and whatever else you could say about them, the floor plan and layout are quite efficient.

That spiny thing is called a squirrel cage fan.

Make sure the furnace is off and try to wiggle the fan. If it wiggles even a little(side to side or up and down, the bearings are bad and can be or cause the rattle.

If the fan does not wiggle, get a small mirror(unless you can see into the fan housing) on a stick, a flashlight and inspect the fan and housing inside. Look for something sticking down in the fan(happened to our furnace) of maybe see where the fan is hitting.

Remove 4 screws holding motor cover and pull cover off. Using a 3/8ths drive ratchet with 7/16ths socket tighten bolt at 2 o clock on motor frame. clean fan,lub motor and replace cover. While you are in there tie that loose black wire up.

My advice is this:

#1) follow the steps described by others from previous posts.

#2) If the Squirrel fan is dirty, clean it. compressed air is the easiest if you have an air compressor, or have a friend that does. Otherwise, dig out the brushes (large ones, small ones & even the toothbrushes) & start cleaning. Cleaning the squirrel cage may or may not, solve the rattling noise.....regardless though, a clean cage works less harder & produces better air flow.

#3) worst case scenario:
Call a furnace repair shop & have them look into it.
I can promise you that if they hear the rattling, they will either know what it is and/or be able to fix it if at all possible.

Footnote:
Calling a repair shop(especially on a weekend) is very expensive...but it almost always gets the problem solved.

My blower motor died. They replaced the entire cage assy. Left me old one. Says they do it all the time. We had maint plan back when we bought house. Have new furnace now.
