Pocket door issue

i just had this pocket door installed and it is completely uneven. The carpenter claims this is normal since part of the door is hidden inside the wall, which makes sense, but it looks awful. I would have thought it would have been cut so that there was even spacing on each side of the paneling and if this isnt possible my contractor should have said something and I would have gone with a flat slab door instead. my contractor already thinks Im difficult and too picky but I have definitely seen 6 panel pocket doors that look symmetrical when closed.

Your contractor should be embarrassed to present this as acceptable! He should swap it out for a flat slab door at no cost to you. Ask him if he would be proud to put this door on his website!

These things have to be accounted for with opening size and the company I used for doors ( they go all the way to full custom) had a semi custom upgrade where the style on the part of the door that stayed in the pocket when the door was closed was wider than the style that came out of the pocket first so that the panels ended up centered when the door is closed. When using a standard panel door you have to fiddle with the opening size to get it visually as close as possible. I would not be happy with your result.

In #1 you really need to consider headering, support for the header, milling the studs to conform to lath deformation caused by tile masonry base coat. 2) "I have a situation" To quote Dave Hester YUUUP "Both doors would need to slide to the same side and could either be enclosed in a pocket or left visible." If you are building a pocket in the room, why do you need two doors? If the pocket is in another room or outside the building envelope, how is it going to be encased or wether protected?

"I went to work in an office that had a pocket door that never worked right because someone had driven nails into it at some point and it was never the same after" (palimpsest) Yes. This happened to us when DH nailed the baseboard on the wall between the laundry and kitchen. The door came off track. When we renovate I will replace or remove. However, this was builder grade. On our extension I added three pocket doors. The one I had put in for the powder room is a solid core door, not thinner than most doors, as I wanted as much sound-dampening as possible with such a device. We used Johnson Hardware - not the home depot variety which runs $ 40 or so, but commercial grade. Look at the Johnson site under 1500 Commercial Grade and you will also find non-standard size frames (door max thickness 1 3/4"). Use a good carpenter.

The closed doors tell the world it is a place that is never used. That would inspire me to re-purpose that room. Great place for a home office. My sister did this and also removed the doors. It was amazing how open and updated just doing that made the entry feel. I would never actually eat in there with the doors closed, and the vision of running children while adults eat..well I see a head or arm going right through that glass. How big is that room? Imagine it full of eating guests...can the doors open easily w/o chairs being sucked in? Pocket doors and actually using the room seem to give you more space, or find a way for the doors to open out into the hall.

Nice to hear that a lot of you like your pocket doors! So I did originally picture our bed on the wall opposite the doors. It has better flow and better access for both of us to the bathroom to me. Here’s my rear elevation to show the window issue. The matching wing to the left is a kids bedroom (picture also included). It wouldn’t be ideal to split that window into two for that room as I picture a twin bed on either side of the window. But perhaps I need to choose the ideal for the master over that room since their beds have more flexibility being smaller.... thoughts?

We just had 5 doors installed, they are perfectly centered (without the trim) in the doorway. They are incredibly smooth when opened and closed. If that was the result of any of the doors in my home, they would be redone. Mailprocessing is right, the contractor should be embarrassed and not making ANY excuses for that installation. It is clearly wrong. Insist on the right door size (because thats the issue). Its his problem.

Clearly this is wrong- he Installed the wrong size door in the pocket- for instance it’s a 30” opening with a 32” door. The door only needs to stick into the pocket 1/4” when closed.

The wrong door for the space who chose the doors ? IMO that door should have been made for that purpose so probably a custom door ir at least a different size that is why you see pics of it the way you wanted.

Nonsense. Pick a standard size door and size the opening to accommodate that particular door.

If for some obscure reason you wanted to specify a custom door width, process is still the same... select door size and size the opening.
