Remove the box over the fireplace and add a fireplace mantle shelf. Use black matte high heat stove paint over the brass stripes on the fireplace screen, unless you are a shiny brass lover. Keep the 2 door cabinet to house your components and remove the box for the flat screen wall mount TV. Depending on the type of flat screen (plasma, OLED, etc) you may need to have the chairs directly across from the TV.

I’d take that whole area out and mount a TV right under the windows. Normally a chimney has to go behind/above a fireplace, so windows wouldn’t be there and it makes the whole thing look off.

I would eliminate the structure around the fireplace entirely and build a less impactful one. Like this one in the picture below:

This way your new TV can find a place on the lower part, which could continue to the window on the right.

Probably, in your case, it would be better reasoned on floor plan: do you have one of the room? You could draw it yourself, with rough measurements. In this way we could also help you with a possible new wall drawing.

Comes down to what you want to spend. The easiest/cheapest solution is to find a flat screen to fit the existing hole. Or the entire corner unit could be removed. The fireplace given it's gas could be shifted so it is centered then the old TV above the fireplace trick. To up the price even more you could close off the windows and put a 'chimney' look detail there. The first suggestion posted seems the most reasonable.

The window treatments are busy and distracting. The transoms don’t need them. Try taking them down and then look at the fireplace with a fresh eye.

Do you use the fireplace? If not, I would redo the whole area with storage cabinets and drawers, and have a counter area for a television. Don’t tie your tv size to a specific spot…you may want a larger or smaller tv in the future, so make that spot flexible. Consider which direction the sun or bright daylight enters the room and place the tv out of direct outdoor light.

A couple solutions based on the assumptions of:

- The direct vent exits the top of the FP insert, which required the bulkhead to allow the pipes to turn to the outside wall, so the bulkhead above the FP cannot be removed;

- You will not move the fireplace;

- You will not mess with the windows;

- You want a larger TV within reason.

Mix and match, other variations exist on each idea:

A. Simplest is build up the top of the bulkhead to put a TV above. TV being centered probably provides for optimum placement within room and seating. However by doing so it is distracting being offset from the FP. So the cabinet/trimwork should be extended, adjusted or removed to provide some balance for the forced symmetry.

B. Build up portion of bulkhead over FP to place TV over it. Allows only a smaller TV, may not be optimal for seating viewing. The cabinet bulkhead should be differentiated somehow in massing for balance/proportion, here shown as a lower cabinet/wood storage.

C. Extend bulkhead over to next window to allow largest TV possible and at best viewing height. To avoid the competing blackness of the FP and misaligned design lines, the TV bulkhead should be differentiated somehow in massing for balance/proportion, here shown stepped back and lower.

I would drywall over the high windows, the light coming doesn't make good viewing of a TV right below. Leave the windows in place (hidden), the outside will still look the same and no additional exterior work is needed.
