The issue is the cabinet interiors are most likely plastic laminate - melamine, which isn't intended to be finished in any way. But as some have said, with enough research and prep (it's all about the prep) it can be done. I've seen the interiors of some glass cabinets done with patterned wall paper to great dramatic effect but it's all about how bold you are with your design and taste. When we did our cabinets (new) we had our glass ones painted inside, but they are plywood cabinets with birch veneer, which is essentially real wood designed to take a finish, so it's pretty durable. Plus in the glass cabinets we used glass shelves which I would highly recommend not only for how they look, but as a way of eliminating the entire painting issue on the most used surface in the cabinet.

This is probably too late to help but I just went through the same thing. My contractor's glass guy quoted $560 for 9 12" high doors with clear safety glass and 2 24" doors, with white laminate safety glass. I thought that was outrageous so did my own research. My local hardware store owner was willing to do it for $300. In the end I used an actual glass store less than a mile from home and paid $275 for a really great, professional job. The glass was installed with silicone instead of the unsightly clip/screw system.

Since you're painting your cabinets anyway, I think you will have good luck finding additional cabinetry to match up with your current door/drawer fronts at Habitat ReStores. I really think you should consider combining the improved layout suggestions from laughable and may_flowers. Your kitchen would be so much more functional and easy to work in! And I think it would look more open and airy as well. If you're able to DIY moving the cabinets, which isn't all that hard to do if you know how to use basic tools and a level, it should be fairly inexpensive. Some plumbing would need moving for the DW but that should be a fairly easy plumbing job. If you can't DIY that, I don't think the plumber's fee would be much. But, of course, you'd want to get quotes on that before proceeding if the budget is tight. I think the only real expense then would be changing the flooring. Unless you're lucky and the flooring goes under the peninsula and island, then you wouldn't even have that expense. I can relate to needing to motivate The Hubster! I bribe with pie but someone else mentioned other more, ahem, private ways of motivating, lol. Maybe pie in bed? :)

It's not weird at all. I wouldn't do white white; I'd do a soft grey or something the complements other things. You see something similar in old china and book cabinets which are often lined with fabric. Oh....is this actually IN your kitchen? In that case the white would be totally fine. If it's alone in a room by itself, THEN go with an interior color that ties into something else.
