12x24 porcelain tiles

My contractor is putting tiles in my bathroom shower. I have 12x24 tiles (his idea) but something is telling me he’s not installing them correctly🥺

You have way more to worry about than tile placement. There is ZERO waterproofing if this is your shower. It needs to be fully redone. Everything.

Appears to be drywall as well.

The labor would be the same as setting large format natural stone, because it has to be set in the same manor. Probably somwhere between 4-5.00 a foot more than 12x12 conventional ceramic.

I'll happily install them. I would rather do it myself instead of having the GC's guy/gal screw up my hard work then call me back to fix it. The tile setter has the proper diamond bits / hole saws and understands the waterproofing system used. The GC will pull out the hammer drill & masonry bit. Thank you! I think I have those exact 2 saved off as examples! My porcelain tiles are manufactured by Daltile. On their website they provide layout pattern templates in pdf. Herringbone and straight herringbone were both both suggested for 12x24 tiles. So I guess it really does vary by manufacturer! I'm definitely going to use on of these patterns

Thanks! I was leaning towards porcelain and will go with it! The laundry room is probably 14' x maybe 5' -- long and narrow. Will see what may work out size size better! Just trying to minimize grout lines :).

It has cement board with some kind of green water proofing painted over it. Is that not correct?

That is correct. If it were just drywall there would be screw heads visible.

There is no membrane on the floor up onto the wall. Big gap.

After looking closer I do see 2 screw heads. There is definitely a liquid applied waterproofing. Judging by the photo on my computer screen the spacing appears to be much wider than the required maximum 8" spacing. Without in progress photos there is only so much that can be determined. As for the floor. It is clearly a liner system and it's good to see a gap which would be filled with sealant to prevent wicking from the bottom edge of the cement / fiber board which can occur when the CBU is buried in the mud bed.

Is that a screw head on back wall, lower left approx. 1" above the mud deck? If so that would be a problem. There should never be fasteners penetrating the liner below the finished curb height.

I don’t know anything about the technical side of things that others have already mentioned but I am honestly confused by the difference in tile shapes, the absence of symmetry in the pattern (?) and the fact that unless I’m reading the scale wrong none of the tiles appear to be 12x24 as you say?..

As far as the the design goes, I have no idea what he is doing here. Part looks like a brick joint and part like a stacked joint.

For a staggered (brick) joint, which I like, from a center line, you would alternate the rows with the first tile directly centered and the next row with a tile on either side of the vertical line. Follow full tiles left and right to the side walls and cut to fit. The remaining piece(s) will begin at these intersections on the side walls. Essentially, you are "wrapping" the walls. It certainly does NOT appear to be 2'x3' tiles here. They look like square tiles with some of them cut in half.

The cement (if it is) board appear to have been painted with Hydroban...a good product but really needs two good coats. In addition, if there is plastic or tar paper attached to the studs, this is a no-no and should not be there. TWO waterproofing materials can cause the dreaded "Mold Sandwich" hidden between the layers. If you're not sure, inspect closely the hole where the mixing valve sits. With a flashlight, you might be able to see back there well enough to determine...

I have serious doubts about his expertise. Choose wisely, Grasshopper!
