Real animal bones should not be your first choice. They can produce pointed or sharp slivers the dog swallows that can be dangerous for the digestive tract. Many dogs like nylabones. Some are flavored and the pieces that break off are rounded and can safely pass through.

I bought mine a Lumabone, she loves it and it lasts a long time!

We use real beef femur bones. Raw only. I have never had a dog (and I've had many over the years) give a second look at a Nylabone. But real bones are great. Never cooked bones. The dogs have never splintered the bones, and when the marrow is gone, I can smear peanut butter inside/ If you don't want raw bones, then look for Red Barn products at your local pet supply store. There are uncooked, but sterilized femur bones, some filled with what my dogs consider fabulous fillings.

Our dogs love both the black Kong bones (really tough to chew through) and raw femur bones that we get at the meat market. They are big pit mixes so are heavy chewers.

I have no idea what these are as my MIL brings them. They last for several years and my dog gnaws a lot. They look similar to real bones but are heavy for their size. Plus if these were real he’d be though them both by bed time.

We tried "yak sticks" a few times. Our chewer loved them but then one splintered and I couldn't take a chance with them anymore.

Our older dog, who was never all that much of a chewer, loves Purina Busy Chewnolas -- basically a beefhide roll covered with a crunchy coating. When younger it would take her a day or two to consume one, now a single treat will last her days. We only give these treats when we are in the same room to actively supervise.

We order moose chews from Acadia Antlers. They actually harvest antlers that are shed in the woods each winter. They are natural, calcium and minerals, hypoallergenic, don't crack or splinter and will last our youngest setter who loves his antlers for about 18 months. Our older dogs love them too. No mess, no choking, just happy pups. Pick size, shape, flavor or you can email/call for advice if you can't decide.

I don't give my dogs bones of any kind, ever. I like Nylabones for teething puppies but even those can be hazardous and dogs should not be left alone with them. They have been known to shard. My heaviest chewer would not be safe with them. for him I bought large heavy duty Kongs, the original shape. The absolute worst dog toy on the market is any toy with a braided rope. Many dogs end up with a gut full of floss that needs to be surgically removed. They should ban them IMO. They can be useful tug toys but never, .ever should they be used as a chew toy. Yet they are advertised as heathy for gum and teeth. Makes me angry.

My current Rottie is on diet of dry kibble. She gets treats of fruits and veggies and a bite or two of what we are eating if it is safe. She loves the moister commercial chewy dog "meat" based treats. She never got into biscuits like the rest of our dogs always have. She was a chewer into her 3rd year but now she prefers soft toys with as many squeakers as possible to be surgically removed by her. We are lucky that she doesn't eat things. She removes them, gives them a couple of chews, spits them out and leaves them.

Wildchild, I totally agree about the rope toys! I watched the story of a hard to rescue dog, he got all kinds of training and was up for adoption when he suddenly died! He died from chewing a rope toy and it got into his intestines and before the foster family realized what was wrong, it was too late! It was such a tragic story! UGH!

That beautiful face in my avatar almost died because of a bully stick. They get sticky and stringy, which I knew but never really worried about.

One day she got a piece caught in her throat and almost died. I have no idea why she tried to swallow such a big piece as she's not a heavy chewer. I drove her to the 24 hour animal hospital and truly thought she was dead. Her tongue was blue when we got there.

No more bully sticks in this house.

I had a super chewer at one time. When she was younger she devoured nylabones and real bones.

What she loved as an older dog was a big knuckle bone style toy that looked like a nylabone, but it was made from the rubbery kong type material. It was tough, but not nearly as hard as bone or nylon. I wish I could remember if it was made by nylabone or kong... or someone else.

The farrier just left a few minutes ago. Right now they are chewing on hoof trimmings. Not because I gave them that....they hang around and grab them.

I give my 8 months old poodle cow ears. He loves them.

Aren't pig ears stinky after they are chewed on? I know I have tried some things that make their breath Horrid!

We give our Doberman 12” sections of raw, split beef leg bones. OK’d by his vet. At ten years old, our boy still has great, healthy gums and teeth.

Lynn, we get 4" to 6" pieces of femur bones at the market, And whole, not split. Then, when the marrow is all licked out, we can smear the inside with peanut butter for a treat.

According to my local pet group, the people and dogs prefer elk and deer bones.

Both my dog & the grand dog love to chew up cardboard tubes like from wrapping paper, paper towels, toilet paper. My dog isn't a chewer at all but he does like the tubes .After they're done, the cardboard goes into the compost bucket.

Don't currently have a dog or plans to get another but when we had labs I would give them small deer antlers to chew on and they loved them.

Do the antlers last long or is it a fast chew?

Joann, antlers are very hard so they last a really long time. My dog, unfortunately, doesn't have an interest in antlers. :(
