How do you keep track of your Orchid data?
Comments (16)Thank you Bryan(Jacamar) for the praise. As Bryan mentioned....Pictures are taken of the plants when they first arrive showing their roots. Another picture of the roots on each repotting, to check for root growth. I take yearly pictures of the plants to keep track of their growth, and to see which plants are doing welll and which plants are not. The ones that are not I try to figure out what I am doing wrong and try and change that. Pictures of each plant as they flower and on the last day of flowering to check the length of flowering. I have files for each orchid on my laptop. Data wise I keep track of price paid, seller and date acquired in one file. In Microsoft word name, seller, the picture off the tag, potting date(all of them), flowering start date, flowering end date, pot size, potting medium, deciduous/evergreen, minimum temperature for use in determining when I can put the plant outside, location of plant(hard to keep up as I keep moving the plants around). Currently I am making tags for each plant which have a picture of the plant(my own picture if the plant has flowered for me or one off the web if it has not) on the one side with the name on it and on the other side it has a picture of the plant as it looked when it was purchased with the first pot date and first flower date - the tag is laminated. I also research each plant in OrchidWhiz software, eAOS software, and on the web and keep various pieces of information like warm/hot/cool grower, time of flowering, length of flowering, size of plant, height and spread, flower size, fragrant and type e.g. vanilla, number blooms, awards, etc. I have tried many different things but never found one method that holds all of the information that I want to keep on my plants. As you can see I spend a lot of time on this....comes from being bedridden for many years.....hopefully my reply is not too confusing. Sorry for the lengthy reply....See MoreA Day in the Life of a Honeybee......(photos)
Comments (27)I can confirm how cool it is to have an area full of wildflowers near your yard or garden! When I lived with my parents for a while, north of Philadelphia, their lot backed up to some electrical power lines. At first that land was farmed, but then the adjoining farmer sold to a developer, and thus the land next to my parents' lot (which was owned not by the farmer, but by the electric utility company) filled with whatever would grow (including more than a few asters and goldenrod!!) You should have seen the variety of tiny, native, solitary bees that used to feed upon my parents dogwoods when they were blooming!!! (If you haven't learned of the native, solitary bees, you really are missing out on some of the most beautiful insects eastern North America has to offer!! The vast, vast majority of them never sting humans, largely because they either don't have stingers, or are so small their stingers are incapable of piercing human flesh. They're cute, and often besides that ) Native solitary bees can be quite useful as pollinators in your yard. They don't live socially, with hives, and workers, and queens. Instead each adult female collects her own nectar and pollen to feed her own set of offspring, but even so when you have many of them (all largely totally harmless, cute, and beautiful) in your yard your flowers and vegetables get pollinated even if you don't have (alien) honeybees there. (Honeybees never existed on this continent until European colonists brought them here. They are only native in Europe, Africa, and Asia.)...See More30 days in the life of a Fisher Paykel
Comments (34)HomeAgain, water left in a drawer or appearing later is 99% of the time caused by incorrect arrangement of the drain hoses. Check your installation and make sure the drain hoses are looped up high as possible under the sink before they connect to the plumbing. If one or both hoses sag down below the drain connection level, water from draining the sink can backflow "downhill" into the unit, or water draining from one drawer can backflow into the other. My F&P unit is 7 years 9 months old, I've never had backflow or standing water in it. No repairs of any kind thus far. mtnrdredux and others: All the DD instruction manuals I've seen up to now have advised that only powder detergent is to be used. I checked a current manual online a few mins ago. It still instructs that liquids/gels are not to be used. Tablets are not recommended but can be used (not placed in the detergent dispenser, of course), with a warning that performance may suffer. I personally would not use tablets in any dishwasher. There's no way to control the dose. There's risk the whole thing would either dissolve in the prewash and/or prerinse leaving no detergent for the main wash ... or on a shorter/low-temp cycle the tablet may not dissolve fully in the main wash, leaving detergent exposure in the rinse....See MoreLife your Life......
