I'm in the process of remodeling my batroom. Totally redoing my shower. Adding a new handheld shower head and a rain shower head. I'm trying to figure out what height to put the supply for the handheld. Ive seen many places, but is there a minimum height to place it or is it personal preference? The handheld is not going to be on a sliding rod. Im going to have a stationary mount.
Which brings me to my next question; how is the handheld mount attached to the wall securely?

I’m actually curious about this too. Even with a slider bar the supply placement seems to be all over the place in product photos.

So, in researching my own question, I came across this website;

It's kind of a long article, and it doesn't give specifics, but it basically says that it's personal preference on where you mount the supply pipe.

Just a word of warning on Moen slider bar fixtures...their chrome fixtures the pieces that hold the bar in place are plastic. I made the huge mistake in building of picking out a book and not putting my eyes and hands on the actual fixtures. Not until they were installed and we were moving in (we built from 1300 miles away) that we discovered they were plastic. There was really nothing we could do at that point without changing all the other fixtures in that bathroom, so we sucked it up and lived with it. That is until about two weeks ago in one of the showers the plastic on the bottom failed and the bar fell out of the sleeve! I called Moen and even though it's been over 2 years since purchase they sent a complete replacement. They have completely redesigned the shower bar and while the pieces are still plastic the design is much better and much more sturdy. They have great customer service, their phone system is great. If a CS rep is unavailable you record your number and they give you a time frame in which they will call you back. It's so much better than being on hold forever. Probably way more info than you wanted, but wanted you to be aware.

Are there any of these units that are suitable for installation in a standard (i.e. small) tub/shower alcover (60x32) that aren't so expensive that I have to consider auctioning off my grandbaby to get one?!? I must be looking in the wrong places, because the ones I've seen so far (online, haven't made it to the store yet) all cost close to or in some cases substatially more than the Kohler soaking tub we're getting - several were 2-3 times the cost of the tub, which we're getting for around $430! In case it matters, all I want is to have a permanent rain shower head plus a separate hand-held, and be able to choose between them (having both run at once is nice but not necessary) - it doesn't need to be on an adjustable-height bar, I don't need to control both separately, I don't need to sense and control temperature or flow in case someone flushes a toilet elsewhere in the house, etc. We're also planning a full remodel, so I can definitely get one that requires you to plumb for it - it doesn't have to hook up to just the existing shower head. Thanks for any links, models, online resources or whatever you can guide me to!

We're are doing a handheld showerhead in addition to the showerhead as well. Our shower is 36" x 66". We are mounting both on the short, end wall, with the handheld between the showerhead and the long back wall. I bought a 6ft long handheld so I can clean the shower easier, so it will come out of the wall even with the controls, drop down and loop back up again higher to the holder position. We also did not want the adjustable bar. I haven't quite decided exactly where I'm going to put the holder, but I think I would like it high enough to where I can take a shower under it if I wanted (I'm 5'4") and also grab it to clean the shower. Since it's 6ft long, I probably have to mount it a little higher so wont drag on the shower floor. Since you are under-tall like me as well, mounting it lower may be good for you to access for cleaning the shower.

Thanks for all the input everyone! So I think I made some decisions. I bought a handheld showerhead from Hammerhead showers. They are all metal, under $100, look nice and get good reviews. I’ll just have the showers plumbed with a regular showerhead pipe and then install the hand held showerhead as the main/only shower head. For my son’s bathroom, I bought this suction cup handheld showerhead holder that we can place lower down for him. It was $15 on Amazon. I just need to find a tub spout and shower diverter now. When we remodel, the horizontal bar won’t be there any more.

Given your username, the first question I have is, ”do the dogs get bathed in this shower?” If yes, how big are the dogs? The bigger they are, the more hose reach you need, so the closer to the middle or bottom of the shower the hose supply should go. Is your hand-held plastic, or is it heavy brass? If brass, you may want the supply high enough to keep it from hitting the floor when dropped. Also, how large is your shower? You want to be able to reach all corners of the shower for cleaning. Lastly, are you or anyone else using the shower, now, or likely to become handicapped? You want the supply to be convenient for someone sitting to shower if yes.

I got a supply fixture that has an attached hand-held bracket so that I can have the hand-held perched on the supply or on the bar. I use it on the supply more than I use it on the bar, since I sit for most of my shower. It is hanging from the supply in this photo.

It swings flat against the wall. The low volume control on the shower wall is for the hand-held. The big center one is the temperature control and the two high ones are the wall head and the rain head.

I wish I had photos of my studs and plumbing behind my shower walls. I believe that the stub for the hand held is simply attached to a stud or to the 2x4 installed to hold the vertical hand-held rail. All needed supports for safety bars and fixtures are planned in advance. Please be sure to install a 2x6 around the height of safety bars. You never know when you may need to install them, and a 2x6 gives you a better chance of hitting it when installing them blind. My grab bars are Jaclo and plumbing controls are Strom.
