using hand-held shower bar as safety bar?
Comments (24)Just so you know exactly what I have...The two rings that trim out where the grab bars attach to the wall each have circlular section that are a slightly warmer tone, almost satin nickel-ish compared to the rest of the chrome grab bar. It would probably normally bother me a lot, but after a total gut renovation on this old houseI've had to let go of perfection to save my sanity. Especially on things that I might only see for a moment each day when I turn the shower water on and off. Also, at the time I was shopping for grab bars, these deltas were the style, function and best price point for us. I'd buy them again. I might request replacement trim pieces after I get a kitchen counter, but right now they're way down on the renovation's prioritized to-do list....See MoreHandheld only/Kids shower-Mounting Options
Comments (19)We heeded the warnings about buying from big-box stores, so Ferguson helped us with all our bathroom plumbing fixtures. They actually directed us to the Delta grab bar as slide bar and the trinsic line of valves, etc. Kind of disappointed about the discolored parts; the grab bar was chrome and is now kind of looking nickel-like, but the end plates are still chrome. It functions perfectly, though. Of course, it's not Ferguson's fault. It's just frustrating. My husband didn't even notice the color change. I think the Delta products with integrated grab bar function might be a new thing? If I remember correctly, our Ferguson didn't have them on display yet in January....See MoreGinger grab bars in shower, and use as a handheld slider?
Comments (0)We're remodeling our master bath and I'm looking to put polished nickel grab bars in our shower. Is there anyone who has used them and can give me some feedback as to how they hold up? I'm thinking of getting the Columnar that have a 1 1/4" diameter. Also, if anyone has retrofitted one of these to use as a vertical slide bar for their handheld shower, I'd be interested to hear about your experience as well. I'm considering using the Jaclo adjustable sliding shower mount with the Ginger grab bar. The mounts work with 1 1/4" diameter bars. We're looking to install Hansgrohe polished nickel shower heads and trim. Their PN is different from the Ginger and Jaclo it seems, but they don't make grab bars, so I don't see a way around mixing the polished nickel finishes. Hopefully it won't be too noticeable. Do you think a regular Hansgrohe slider would be sturdy enough to use as a grab bar when getting in and out of the shower? TIA...See MoreHandheld shower faucet slide that is also a grab bar?
Comments (5)I would NOT recommend a grab bar handheld shower head combo. I specialize in accessible design and having it as a combo is in my opinion is not safe, because a grab bar is supposed to be at a position specific to your capabilities and limitations; so if you do needed it, it is a reactionary grasp, because falling only takes a split second. Also the combo grab bar will be at too high of a position, and not at a lower level since it needs to be lower as you fall down and not up. I would recommend a separate slide bar typically placed on the inside corner of the shower, but can be placed anywhere that works for you. It can be placed lower, so if needed, can be reached at a sitting position, or for children to use. I have purchased and used (for almost 9 years) the Kohler K-8524 (30") or the K-9069 (24") and they come in chrome, polished chrome and brushed nickel. I like these, because to move the shower head holder, you pinch the lever and slide it up or down. there is no knob or lever to turn and lock in place. It also stays in position, which is important. As far as grab bars, as I mentioned, it needs to be installed specifically for your capabilities and limitations. But the most important thing is that it is secured in solid wood blocking. If anyone tells you that they will install it into a wood or metal stud, they do not know what they are doing. A grab bar is supposed to hold 250 pounds of pull or push force. Unless you have large hands, I also recommend the 1-1/4-inch diameter and not the 1-1/2-inch that you typically see in accessible stalls. There are thousands of grab bars, but it would depend on what you are looking for. There are Universal Design grab bars that don't look like the typical stainless steel ones. Also your budget will make a difference. But if you just want the grab bars for safety. then I would recommend ones made by Wingits. They have a knurled area that makes it non-slip. I have used them for almost 10 years. You can purchase them on Amazon now, which will make it easier to get....See Moresusan631
