Large sectional for small living room? Comfort over style?
I would like to get a mid-century modern sectional sofa for my small living room, 11ft x 11ft 6in (or 132in x 138in). The one I am considering is 112(W)x68(D)x35(H). I'm not sure if it will look good with my layout, though I'm sure it would be very comfortable, so I'm tempted. Also, I love the tan colour, but my house has thick honey-oak window trims, which I am not planning to change. And the fireplace brick are orangy/mustard colour combination. So, I am not sure about the size, about "blocking" the flow to the room from the hallway and the colour. I drew the current layout and the future layout with furniture to scale. Any ideas are very much appreciated!

Sectional Sofas...a good idea? or don't go there?
Comments (39)Just to update, we finally ordered a sectional from Century. It is L shaped with a loveseat on one wall and a sofa length on the other. The good thing is that it is 43" deep so it should be very comfortable to lay on. We chose a chenille type fabric in a greenish tone. We started the room's decor off by picking 2 oriental rugs and pulling colors from that. The sofa comes with 7 throw pillows, so I chose 2 different fabrics for 4 of those. We'll see if it works or not when it comes in! On another note, once we started to choose decor, we realized the color on the walls was pukey and we had to get the painters back to change from blue to brown. I'm so glad we did that. It really warms up a basement room with no windows. The lighting is what made color selection so tricky. Also in there, we got a leather recliner from Hancock & Moore. And the really neat looking Wisteria Barn door coffee table. Funny thing is that when it arrived, it really did smell like a...barn door! Comments (13)Thanks for the great tips. Yes, it's a good point that 16 won't be sitting at the same time...more like 12 or so. Sadly, I have to go fairly dark due to the cleaning and staining issues. I should have added that I plan to add a large 12 x 15 area rug to break up the dark sofas from the darkish wood. I can't go with medium gray because it will look too "matchy-matchy" with the med. gray stone fireplace. Quick question/concern...I searched for sofas that are made from "Sunbrella" people here suggested and there are only a few and they are outdoor sofas. Mostly, the Sunbrella fabric is pillows. Also, I'll be removing both sofa tables behind the sofas that are there now, so that will give me another~ 4+ feet. But I still plan on putting more narrow sofa tables as I don't want the sofas right up against the walls, so it will be more like an extra 2 feet I'll be gaining. Any other suggestions for a "tough" fabric that won't be torn easily? We've had issues with guests sitting on the sofas, etc., with keys, etc, in their back pockets that tear the fabric or snag it. What are opinions on leather? Vinyl? Also, I'd like to lighten up the room with a cleaner, more modern white (ish) paint, maybe with a touch of gray, )but not with any blue or "pink" in it.) The walls are now painted Sherwin-Williams "Accessible Beige" and the Doors (not seen in the pictures are "Dovetail"...which I LOVE, but is way too dark for the walls. Comments (6)A sofa and two lounge chairs is always the most flexible, however a sectional small in scale might work. I might consider placing the TV in the RH corner instead of giving it a whole wall, but it's hard to tell without seeing that wall. Comments (4)I have an old bumper sectional from Room & Board that I need to replace and I have been hunting for bumper sectionals too. I have been looking for made in the USA and something equal or better quality than what I have now. Many of the mid-high end furniture brands have customizable sectionals and you have to dig into the specifications to see if they offer a bumper option. I have not yet pulled the trigger on any of them yet. 2 years agoThis is largest sectional you can handle in this room. 7’-2” x 7-2”. A sofa 86” long in front of window plus two chairs facing sofa with center long narrow coffee table would seat more comfortably. How many people do you need to seat in this room?

In answer to the question..........people LOVE it. Everyone gets their arm......and it's conversational. Three rarely sit on a sofa. Kids are the exception : )

2 years agoThank you everyone for such helpful comments. The reason I wanted a sectional is because I wanted to have a place to lie down and watch the fire place in winter, possibly even sleep there. And I love the look. But yes, it would possibly overwhelm the room. My goal is to make a living room that is cozy and will be used. A small house is a bit challenging.

2 years agoI've always wanted to have a room where I could have the setup that Jan recommends, but I'm going to agree with Flo that you can have a sectional. Here's an article from AD that argues how sectionals are great for small spaces. In your room, I like the sectional layout much better than your current layout. But I would agree with getting one that has a back on both sides vs the chaise. I tried to find one for you, but it actually may be hard to find in a small size. PB has an apartment shop with smaller pieces, and Ballard Designs has lots of sectional options too that maybe you could piece together.
One of my favorite podcasts just had an episode about small spaces, and they that small furniture with lots of legs makes a space feel anxious. Flo's layout, with a sectional without legs and an ottoman, would make your space feel cozy. And then you'd just have your current chair in the corner with legs.
Different style from your room, but a small space with bookshelves and a sectional.
