What do you wish you had NEVER planted?
Comments (59)Ricky, I use huge leather welding gloves and the same tool as you. How about after they fall and need to be picked up and hauled to the curb? How about while carrying them, dont you get punctures in your hips and arms from the branches sticking out over the top of the can? And then when walking out to the curb (barefooted) to get the empty cans and stepping onto small chunks of these poison tipped organic hypodermic needles that missed the truck? The answer sounds like 'book' material to me! I am waiting to hear 'Karen does THAT part'...See MoreWhat do you WISH you'd photographed pre-demo?
Comments (4)Pictures of every wall in every room, ad even some ceiling and floor pictures. Even more useful will be pictures of every wall ad ceiling before the walls are closed up again. It allows wiring and plumbing to be located again even after the job is finished. Years later when you want to add or move an electrical outlet you can look and see how it was connected....See MoreWhat do you wish you'd known when you started?
Comments (60)I agree that research is essential. Everyone has been seduced by glossy pictures at garden nurseries or has overlook good roses based on pics. For example, if I didn't read glowing reviews on Julia Child on this forum, it wouldn't be a rose I would had bought had I seen it at the nurseries. At glance, it looks just like any yellow rose that is available. But fellow rosarians can't be wrong, especially from so many people from different climates and countries. It is definitely one of my favourite rose so far. In my experience it is better to spend a bit more money on strong plant than to buy cheaper weaker ones. This may not always be the case but a strong plant with strong canes is essential in my opinion, especially for those of us who live in colder climates. After so many years growing roses, disease resistant varieties and vigor is on top of my list. I would be willing to forego most roses no matter how beautiful they are especially if they are famously prone to diseases and are not vigorous. Of course, I have made exceptions but there is no point in wasting time to nurse unhealthy plants that takes a lot of your time and energy and space for that matter. Last but not least, do not stress yourself out with rose problems such as Japanese beetles and blackspot. I admit that I have been beaten down last year by Japanese beetles. However, I am trying to find other ways to deal with them. I may experiment with the traps as a few gardeners I know has found to be very effective for them. I started to buy more bs resistant roses and I found it really helps. I still get bs at the end of summer but they are more minimal. The last advice I have is don't subject yourself to a heart attack if your rose died. It happens like everything else in life. There are so many roses to grow and take the opportunity to grow a new one....See More"must have" functions and things you wish you'd thought of/included
Comments (46)There's no such thing as leaving the fan on too long. My wife took a shower before bed last night leaving the bath and bedroom sticky with the extra humidity (she doesn't like the fan on for some reason). I turned the fan on and left it running all night. What would be the problem with that? It's a waste of electricity, and it puts more wear/tear on the fan. Deep medicine cabinet if your situation allows for that (pic attached). Love that. Cavernous vanity storage under sink (pic attached). I don't love that deep, dark storage where it'll be easy to lose things. Shower at least 16 square feet. If grab bars are a concern (for aging in place), be careful of how you structure that square footage. If you go beyond 4' wide, you may not be able to reach the grab bars on the two sides at once. Plenty of shower storage. We have two horizontal shelves and a small window ledge. Still we needed a hanging shower caddy. I used Command hooks to hang the caddy and a squeegee in the shower. Love it! If you are going to use a tub and it is any kind of oversized unit, it should be insulated and have a high flow faucet. If not insulated and with a low flow faucet it can take 30 minutes or more to get a usable amount of water. By then the water is cooling off. You should be able to fill a tub in way less than 30 minutes. Related thought: Be sure your water heater is big enough for a tub. Don't see a reason to have a light dimmer in the bathroom. Mood lighting?? What mood are you trying to get into when you're in the bathroom? I have LED night lights all over the house. I can think of two reasons for low light in the bathroom. Night light is one of them. I also don't see a reason to have two sinks in a bathroom. In my 40 years of marriage there have been zero times when another sink would have helped. Agree. It's just more money and more square footage. San Antoin' - lots of great ideas but I don't understand the need for 36" around toilet, is that to give plumber more access space? 36" is for your comfort. You, especially when you reach your arms for the toilet paper, are wider than the toilet itself....See Morelily316
