Goat people: What do you wish you'd known before getting them?
Comments (14)I wish I would have known how much fun they are to have around. I would have had them sooner. Not over feeding them grain is important. You can kill them with kindness...and they are pretty convincing when they tell you they are starving. I have a dozen goats of various breeds and ages and mine free range with no problem. They are a friendly group and the first few weeks I stayed with them and walked with them where they were allowed to be. Now they have their own routine. I still need to walk out back with them to get them out of the barn, but once they start eating I can slip away without them following me. They seem to keep the same routine everyday...browsing their favorite spots in the same order....finishing with the pine trees then back to the barn. One thing I do keep in mind now, is that when I am purchasing a goat, I make sure they have been handled and are used to people. They are just easier to handle when you do need to get ahold of one for hoof trimming or whatever. Have fun! Carrie...See MoreWhat do you wish you'd never planted?
Comments (22)I have to laugh. On my roadsides (aka 'Home of All Things Invasive) I have: Loosestrife Gooseneck (well behaved) Mallows Lychnis Helianthus Houttuynia (won't spread) Bishop's weed (can't get it to spread) Liriope Cleome of all colors (reseeded but 99% died in the heat) Chocolate mint Ajuga (can't get it to spread) Obedient Plant (looks like it might start spreading) Black-eyed Susans (self-contained, too) Onethera (won't spread) Vlad's Strawberries (Gone WILD!) Arc angel (sulking) Christina (Lettsee's) ffield daisies died. Spiderwort disappeared. Dead Nettle (dead?) Even my 'Elvis Lives' hosta, didn't. At least the liriope in all its variations is happy. Not spreading, but happy. I think my microcosm has far too much, unending sun and no water. Things seem to need that to spread. It's even called my sedum 'acre' to dry up and die in many places. Sedum! I've had 3 rains in 10 weeks and I cannot keep up with the soaker hoses. I can only wish your bane were my gain! When you want it to spread, nothing happens. Ah well. Comments (25)My NEVER AGAIN list includes: adenophora, snow on the mountain, lamb's ears, japanese artimesia. I think the "cherry bells" are pretty, but they came up everywhere so I yanked them! I actually have had no trouble with a lot of the plants you all have chosen here. No prob with daisies, mock orange, astrantia, bee balm, astilbe, etc. Have had absolutely NO luck with foxgloves, coreopsis "early sunrise" and "limerock ruby", or gaillardia "burgundy". My oriental poppies do well, but I, too am thinking they are not worth the trouble. I pulled my lady's mantle this year, with limited garden space I prefer "showier" plants. Some of you got my "Always Afternoon" daylilies because they were an off color in my soil, I am also pulling my "black eyed stella", and possibly a couple more, same reason as lady's mantle. There are others I have difficulty growing, but this is all I can think of off the top of my head. Linda...See MoreWhat do you WISH you'd photographed pre-demo?
Comments (4)Pictures of every wall in every room, ad even some ceiling and floor pictures. Even more useful will be pictures of every wall ad ceiling before the walls are closed up again. It allows wiring and plumbing to be located again even after the job is finished. Years later when you want to add or move an electrical outlet you can look and see how it was connected....See Morelily316
