Need help finishing a small sitting area space that looks soooo empty

I have a small sitting area off my dining area (open concept) that seems very empty. The only thing in the picture that I'm set on are the chairs and area rug.

The space is 8 x 7. The folk art goat and the lamp are there just to give me an idea of how filling the space will look. Doesn't look so good to me. Ha, ha

The side table seems too small. Should I do a triangular coffee table or round table?

Any ideas are welcome, thanks so much.

What is the budget for a table?

Seeing your wonderful vintage pieces, I’d go in that direction — look on Chairish, First Dibs, local buy/sell websites, go to vintage/antique malls, etc.

I’m picturing something caned, or faux bamboo legs, or rattan … along those lines. A glass top might be something to think about, as it would reflect light in there amid all the wood.

Honestly, you could put just about anything in there. Find something that speaks to you. :)

@Jilly Thanks, I'm a terrible accumulator of vintage pieces that I need to finally use or give a new home. My budget is usually thrift store pricing that I clean up but for the right piece, I can expand, LOL. I like the idea of metal and glass. It could be larger but not take up visual space. The bamboo look is very nice.

How about a counsol table with a couple benches or ottomans underneath it. They can be moved over when you need extra seating and they are out of the way when you don't need it. I inherited this one from my mother. I love being able to display things on top, store things in the drawers and easily wheel the benches out when we need extra seating.

I'm going to do something like the first pic luckyblueeye posted above. A little conversation area, 2 chairs and an ottoman. When you say you like the table long ways....do you mean short end of table to short end of island? I think it looks a little odd but I don't know what else to do. I was thinking I'd get a large round table but I don't think I'll have enough walk room on either side of the table since I want to have my hutch and something else decorative on the other wall. I love having the table closer to the kitchen area though.

Since it would be difficult to match your existing cabinets and the vent complicates things, I would recommend a temporary piece like the ones shown by Olychick. Should you choose to keep the overhang, you can add a leg for support which would make the overhang look intentional. If you are changing up your counters for stone, this will be needed to support the extra weight. Adding a backsplash that continues to the end of the overhang will also tie it into your space more. How old is your son? That's a small yard to incorporate much play area after the patio is constructed. Doug's design is ideal but there goes the play space. Could you install fencing this spring and hold off on the patio for a couple of years? Put two adirondack chairs on the lawn in the shadow of the house for the adults. When your son no longer needs the grass, implement Doug's plan.

IMO no chair from what I see it makes a perfect spot for a really nice buffet and some art above it and bit of decor including a lamp otr two I do not think it was meant for a sitting aerea at all. Ilove the goat please make sure to find a home for him.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting I love the goat too. He always has a home someplace in my house. When it's not hurricane season, he even goes outside.

The spot is probably not meant for a sitting area but I do more sitting than buffeting, especially as the sun sets outside the sliders. I'll keep trying to make it work. Thanks!
