Need Help in HVAC ducts placement in the basement

Hi,

We are in the process of refinishing our existing basement. The basement area is about 1000 sq ft, and we are having a problem deciding on the placement of HVAC registers in the area.

There are existing ducts with registers near the floor in the workroom, office, and library. In the family room area - about 400 sq ft - there is only one duct / register on the bathroom wall, and it has dual registers - one to the family room, and another one to the bathroom. We are not sure if there would be enough heat in the family room. While drywall had not been installed yet, we have an option of adding another duct.

We consulted a few HVAC technicians, and are getting different advice. One suggested that there is no need for additional ducts, since we have 4 ducts for 1000 sq.ft. Another said that we need a duct in the area adjacent to the bathroom ( near the fireplace ). The proposed duct will run between the studs in the outside wall (most of the basement is underground).

There is also no cold air return cover right now, and the technicians both said that we do not need it, since there are enough gaps under doors to pull air into the furnace.

We had scheduled an insulation contractor for the next week, and need to make a decision re heating in the basement.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
