Porcelain slab countertops

I've been trying to learn about porcelain slab countertops. It seems that they have all the advantages of porcelain tile without the disadvantages of grout. I've read they've been widely used in Europe. I think every example photo I've seen is in an extremely contemporary or modern kitchen. Why? Would like to learn more. Is it hard to find expert cutters and installers? Are they not used in bathrooms because of the size of slab one must purchase?
