porcelain slab countertops - possible to flush-mount induction unit?

Contemplating a porcelain countertop like Dekton or Sapienstone (and yes listening to the critics about various issues). But I have a more specific question-

Given the hardness and thinness of these products, is it possible to install a countertop induction stove flush-mounted, which requires both a hole for the unit and very precise depression for its rim to sit on? Would certainly be engaging a serious installer, given the material's inherent challenges. thanks!

The Cosentino website shows examples of flush-mounted cooktops in Silestone but I didn't see any in Dekton. The expensive Miele KM6365 induction cooktop instructions states:

"Flush mounted cooktops are only suit able for installation in granite, marble, tiled or solid wood counters. See "Installation dimensions" to check which cooktop can be fitted into a glass counter. For all other counter materials, consult the counter manufacturer whether they can be used with a flush mounted cooktop."

Apparently Corian could be used.

Personally, here is how I see your dilemma. If you just want to see how it looks, I'll suggest that you already know how it looks, in general. And yes, people do appreciate fine touches well done. So yes, it is "worth it" in the big picture if you want something special. Your fabricator is the one to talk to for a serious discussion. They need to be skilled. They need to be proud to do it. How the gap will look after they cut / router the opening: ie. whether the stone will chip there (etc), whether you will be willing to pay for the extra cutting / polishing time, whether they will cut it a bit wide just to be sure it's not too small -- in other words how much they are competent capable and interested in doing a good job. Try calling Miele and speaking to a specialist. I've done this many times, and received many emails with attachment images. The photo or image will no doubt show the best view. The Miele's steel rim is well designed, or adapted, to be recessed. hth

@aspen75, I have that same griddle that I use on mine. I understand and experience what you are saying and it is a bit of a disappointment. However, it has never hindered my cooking abilities on it. I mainly use my griddle for fish, shrimp, or pancakes (DH sometimes uses it for squash and zucchini) and because the heat ends up dispersing throughout the griddle, I never have issues with the food I cook. Sometimes I might have to move my fish or shrimp around as it cooks, but it still cooks. I'm still very pleased with my Wolf and so glad I went with it over gas, which we had before and which definitely had far worse hotspots. I have not tried a cast iron griddle on mine because I like the ease of cleaning the one I do have. Plus, I have a Blackstone on my patio just off my kitchen and I use it a ton in the spring, summer, and fall when I truly need a griddle ;)

Dana - so glad to hear your porcelain is holding up so great!! That’s very encouraging. After 2+ years of planning / designing and researching all things kitchen and countertops, we started construction in July and we are finally about to see it all come together! Our cabinets arrive from Amish Indiana on Monday and I met with our fabricator on Friday (and saw my 4 gorgeous Antolini slabs) who said it will only be 2-3 weeks to cut them after we discuss where the pattern/ veining should be seen. I absolutely cannot wait!!! In a fun and unexpected twist, my fabricator also had some porcelain remnants that matched the countertops so well that we are using these for a quick fireplace surround update too. I hope to post photos in about a month? Maybe they will inspire someone else to also try porcelain w/ a vetted and experienced fabricator.

I have found that much of the advice from appliance manufacturers regarding flush, inset, and other unusual appliance installation applications is completely wrong. There is usually no engineering analysis done vetting these unusual installations. Often the advice manufacturers give is actually dangerous. Such as advising until 2011 using high CFM hoods with professional appliances in homes without replacement air systems. Manufactures knew this was dangerous for a decade before building code was changed to protect consumers. Insetting ovens in inset and beaded inset cabinetry is crazy and very dangerous, but it is presently encouraged by appliance manufacturers because home owners like the look. Our company will not sell a kitchen with these fire hazard applications, and we have lost 40 and 50K cabinet orders because we refuse to sell it. That being said I would guess that the gap around the cooktop with a Deckton top would be needed for expansion and not for venting, and that your gap looks about right. I have no idea if high temperature silicon will hold up over time but it can easily be removed. And the application at least doesn't seem dangerous. High-temperature silicone is designed to withstand up to 500°F, but some formulas are rated up to 572°F or 600. I doubt any countertop fabricator will remake a top at no charge with this unusual appliance application. But I think it isn't needed and that you already have the best case scenario. If it cracks as Joseph says due to the tight radiuses then you can ask them to replace it at no charge and get larger radiuses, or better yet install the cooktop the way it was designed for. @darbuka we saw this concept when shopping for our porcelain slabs. Its brilliant and I hope it takes off in the US (just like porcelain slab c-tops)!! However as a marketing professional I also think "invisacook" is sort of a ridiculous name. The cache is in the seamless slab look and the European origination, IMO. They should use those concepts to come up with a better name that sounds less like a Walmart gadget. ;) But yeah, a very savvy cooking element for a beautiful / minimal kitchen.

@Benjamin Grant I looked at Sapienstone for about a year and decided against it simply because I preferred the colorway offered by AntoliniTech. However, one thing I learned very well is that your fabricator and their level of experience is the key to everything. I encourage you (if you havent already) to find a highly recommended fabricator in your area that is referred by Dekton or Sapienstone (usually listed on their websites). Contact them and make an appt to go to their warehouse and ask about installing the countertop induction stove you want in a flush-mount application. Bring the specs of the product with you. If they can do it, or have done it, they will tell you and probably have photos of what they have done already.
