Phantom Screens - How to keep varmints out during winter ?

Last winter (Minnesnowta) something chewed through one of our phantom screens. The result was a small hole near the top and then a line of ever increasing holes to the bottom (made a V when the screen was rolled up). It wasn't inexpensive to replace. :-(

Any thoughts on how to prevent this in the future?

- Keep the screen down all winter? Any idea how risky this would be? Guys installing our replacement said that they thought this would be OK. I'm assuming snow will blow through so we'd need to raise them occaisionally to shovel.

- One thought is that the varmint was a foodie so it may be an issue of just being more careful to insure that no bugs or other delicacies get rolled up in it.

- Dryer sheets rolled up at the end so they'd be near the outside? Would these damage or discolor the screen?

- Stick some moth balls up in there?

- Other ideas?

Thanks,
